Agree!
I like taking alternate routes whenever I can! Interstates are great at thier intended purpose....getting from point A to point B in a ricky-tick fashion, but its nice to slow down and get off the beaten path!

If this discussion is just about covering distance, and comparing 301 versus taking I-75 and I-10 with a big rig, I'll take the interstate every time. When you go 301, there's more traffic entering and leaving you have to watch for, not to mention speed limit changes all the way, and the ultimate decision at each traffic signal as to whether to jam on the brakes or run them!
After you measure it all up......the time difference for the interstate is negligible and a whole lot less stressful for yourself and your brakes.

The OP's question was is 301 doable. I think the consensus is that it is, you just have to be aware of the small towns and the speed changes. I drive 301 regularly, 5-10 times a year, so to me, it is the best way to get from Ocala to JAX.

Yup. The traffic is much lighter than you will find on the west bypass. I'd rather drive straight thru JAX than take the west bypass!

We did the west bypass ONE time, never again. Will try the east bypass in a couple of weeks and see how we like it. I too, agree with straight thru JAX as opposed to the west bypass.

Depending on where you are coming from US 19 South thru Perry Fl. is 4 lane good road south use to be a major road to South Florida before I75 still a good route can go to Chiefland FL, then cut over to Ocala if u like or go on South to Tampa area lots of traffic is avoided this way. If coming down I75 exit at Valdosta Ga.

We've been running off interstates as often as possible. Much better feel for the country and small town charm wins over trees and wide median flying by.
