Reef Health

Worthwhile discussion on reef health. I live here in the FL Keys and I am enjoying raising my family in this unique environment with easy access to a precious opportunity for exploration of nature's wonders.
I encourage you all to visit and only request that you be good stewards of our oceans and shorelines. There are issues, strategies, and plenty of good folks trying to make a change.
For more information I recommend the following websites:
Reef Relief
Florida Reef Resilience Program
USGS Coral Reef Health
The Nature Conservancy

This is great information as I would love to go to the Keys and stay somewhere with full hook ups, for Christmas! Does anyone have a scoop on what would be great? And are there any on the beach per say?

Iggy, my brother used to own a B&B in Key West and used to go there a couple of times a year. Great tour company to go snorkling with in Key West is Sebago. They have a couple of large catarmarans that take you out to some coral reefs and the fish are spectacular! Great people, fun and very safety conscience. Free beers on the way back to port. Also, if renting a boat make sure you buy a chart for the waters you'll be in. They are not expensive and will add a great amount of safety to your exploring the waters. Be prepared to pay big dollars for very ordinary fish dinners through out many areas of the Keys, especially Key West. You'll find much better "fried in beer batter fish fries" when you head up through NY on your way to Niagara Falls for the F.R.O.G. gathering anywhere and any taveran in the Buffalo or Nia.Falls US area. In the 8 years my brother had his business not once did he have a fish dinner in the Keys because they could not compare to what he was used to back home. Of course, this is in my and his humble opinion.

Hi sherman12

Thanks for the information. I will probably agree that we can get much better sea food heading north up the east coast. All my DW want is shrimp and she's happy. Maybe I'll just buy some and make ourselves.

Anyway things are moving forward and waiting for the details about Niagra Falls.
Stay warm.

Iggy, though the fish fries are not that hot, there is alot of soft shell crab, warm water lobster and clams around and all are a treat if you like that type of sea food.

I haven't had a soft shell crab for many years. Luv em.
cClams and warm water lobster sound good also.
I guess the DW will have to get her shrimp along the north coast of the gulf.

Can anyone tell which side of the keys is better on a tour boat/snorkel cruise?
Atlantic of Gulf side? I remember someone mentioning being better on gulf side or Atlantic?
Any particular cruise by name would be helpful.
They seem to run $35 -$50 per person depending on the early or late day, lunch, etc.
Thanks

Weather in May in the Keys is quite nice. Humidity is really not bad, and ocean breezes are fairly constant. Keep in mind that residents of South Florida, myself included, flock to the Keys in spring and summer for relief from humidity and to cool off.

You should also reference this Florida Keys Mile Marker Guide on your trip. The Keys' Overseas Highway is 100 miles long, and this guide is an invaluable resource.

And have fun in Florida's favorite playground!

What a coincidence. I just finished an email to Bluewater Key resort at Mile Marker 7-8 I believe (just above KW obviously) for mid April. Waiting for June-August would be sweltering
We were there last year and vowed to be back. The Florida Keys are like a different planet.

Perfect time to enjoy the view. Great fishing before it's too hot.

Yes Alan the Gulf is calling me and can't wait.
It seems everyone here is so helpful in giving trip and food suggestions.
Being retired USAF I'm able to stay at the Coast Guards Station on Marathon and the Navy Sigsbee RV park at the soutern end of the keys.

We are now looking into beaches and boat trip around the area.

Yes to all, Iggy. The Dry Tortugas run is an all day trip with a light lunch provided. Get your tickets at Sigsbee ITT office and save a few bucks.
