After looking this over some more, we may see about wondering over to Okeechobee on our way down to the Keys, it's not going to add that much more time to our plans and it sounds like it would be worth checking out!

The Sugar Cane fields and the Everglades are truly unique and a complete 180 from the nightmare that is the South East coast of Florida!! Enjoy the Keys they are beautiful!

Use the Florida Turnpike instead of I95. It is really congested the further south you go. Otherwise, your planned route is good.

Fla. trip
If you find yourself in Key West on a Sunday morning, take yourself to Louies Backyard for the Sunday Brunch. Your mouth and tummy will thank you!
And have a Bloody Mary for me and the wife. Or 2!

We've been to the Keys twice, both times stayed @ Bahia Honda S.P ,AWESOME ! I 75 TO US 41 TO I 95 TO Fla.1 and a boat load of bridges. US 41 is great ,no traffic and thru the everglades.A great stop to eat and rest is on 41 , and plenty of alligators .So much nicer than I 75. Another wonderful destination stop is in Tampa Bay @ Fort DeSoto - another island ! We stay at both when go down .

Nice! I've heard great things bout Bahia Honda - we're staying at John Pennekamp this time around and since we'll be coming from Wekiwa State Park, we'll probably make our way down so that we pass by Okeechobee Lake. Thinking about maybe stopping by Shark Valley Visitors Center for a tram tour. So many things to do, it's hard to choose, especially when you have attention deficit tendencies, lol!

I just checked out their brunch menu, sure does look good! It appears there will be plenty of good eats to enjoy in the area so it's nice to get recommendations

Or maybe we'll take a 'Tigertail Airboat Tour'?

Once you get to Florida, I'd be interested to know how it was driving on I10 from Katy to Florida. Last time I drove that route (many years ago) it was a very rough ride!

I find camping in the keys very pricey $$$$. Boyd's on Stock Isl by KW is 120/night and not a very nice CG. However not far from the beach on the SE side by the airport. I wonder is Lover's Tacos still has a truck there?

Make sure when you get to the keys that you visit the Butterfly House, you'll love it. Also, park the car and use the Trolley. Easy on/easy off at major attractions. Ride all day for one fare. So much to see in town. We'll be revisiting again next year. Enjoy your trip!

Avoid going into and coming out of the Keys on Saturday if you can. That's the day most rentals turn over and traffic will be heavier with people going in and leaving. Like they say, don't get in a hurry.

Keys
I have been traveling to and from the Keys for 40 years, one thing is that you can count on is road construction I have never gone down there and not encountered it somewhere. you can go either way using turnpike all the way or I-95 to Fort Pierce then cross over to turnpike to save on tolls. there are also restaurants in the stretch between I-95 and turnpike for a break. Usually cheapest fuel with easy access is when you first get on Key Largo its a Shell on the left. As stated above articles speed in Keys mostly 45 but traffic can be stop and go keep good distances. If you get to Key West visit the White Tarpon for a Key Lime Martini best on the planet.

Safe travels! The Keys are our favorite vacation spot, if you couldn't tell by the profile and signature pictures! Are you staying exclusively at John Pennekamp? If so, be aware that it's a good 3 hour drive down to Key West from there still, so it's not much of a daytrip.
If you decide to move down the Keys, we have camped at Jolly Roger at MM58 and really liked the place. From there it's still over an hour to Key West, but a more do-able day trip.
Unfortunately with all life has been tossing our way and will continue for the next couple of years, we don't have any Keys trips planned until 2019.

Keys
Also near Jolly Roger is Long Key state park its on the atlantic side they stay booked but they do keep a couple sites for transient visitors. Each campsite is on the water and it is only 20 ft from campsites. The water is crystal clear and knee deep for a 100 yrds awesome day to spend laying around in the water having a cold one. That is half way to key west. We go every year to Long key and met great people from all over the country. you can look on reserve america to see if avail sites. but I know they keep a couple open for drive ups.
