Florida to cooler weather.

My wife and I moved to Ocala Florida from California in May. Where do Floridian's RV in the summertime to avoid the summer heat?

I go to the north shore of lake Superior. 70s typical for July and August. Doesn't really start to get warm until mid-June because of the cold lake water.

As a kid, the family tent camped a few times in Indian Lake State Park, near Manistique, MI. Even in the Summer, we occasionally awoke to near freezing temperatures!

I edited my post to narrow the replies. The above suggestions are good but I am looking for somewhere a little closer to Florida for a shorter trip. Thank you for the suggestions. rjwilder

Sorry; but we ran into several campers this year and like other years they are all up north. They summer either in the New England area or upper MI around Traverse City or the UP You might try the Smokey NTNS in Tennessee or West Virginia.

The entire south east is hot and humid in the summer. The best I can tell you is in the north Georgia mountains or the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. The further up in elevation you go, the cooler it will be. This is all relative though. This may not give you the same coolness or dryness of air you were used to in California. Close to home, we like to camp in Florida State Parks or at Williston Crossings RV Resort, about 30 minutes from Ocala. There are shady sites and many of the state parks are near rivers and springs where you can swim to cool off. Williston Crossings has a pool. We also like camping in the panhandle, including the state parks at St. George Island and St. Joe's.

LOL - I did that often - till this year in Rainbow Springs. Beautiful clear cool water, but while swimming a huge alligator just came along maybe 20 ft away. I am done swimming in Fl rivers!!! That happening ruined my day.....

CampingGator you are correct about the weather in California vs Florida summers. In California we only had a three hour drive to escape the 100 degree valley heat for the cool Pacific Ocean breezes. Not so here in Florida.

Looks like we need to do some research about mountain camping. Rjwilder
