Fort Pickens Campground open during shutdown?

I have reservations soon. Wondering if anyone is currently camping there?

We live right around the corner from Davis Bayou campground, which is part of the GINS. The gates are closed with signs posted that park is closed. Their website says they are closed so it's a good bet Fort Pickens is closed too. Shame, FP is a jewel. Good luck.

We're in the same boat so to speak.
Have reservations in Midway Campground in Big Cypress National Preserve.
Fingers crossed they get funded soon!
(Guess I need to put Fort Pickens on my radar for future trips!)

KyDan,

I have been to Midway on several occasions, most recently this past October. I really like that campground as it is so close to many interesting nature spots in that area.

I first went there about 4 years ago for the full 10 days allowed in January. My AT&T plan allowed me to get txt msgs but no phone access. The place was 95% full. I subsequently camped there twice in mid to late October and the place was 95% empty.

Be sure to do the LOOP ROAD nature viewing while in the area. I did drive to the Everglades Nat'l Park once 3 years ago, but was very disappointed and will not waste my time on that drive again. This October we drove to Coral Castle in Homestead and found it to be a very interesting hour long tour there.

I hope we both get to use our reservations this winter, but I doubt it.

I've also got 10 days there and we are just gonna sit home and watch what happens.

If they get staffed we'll take off.
Otherwise we'll wait for our 2nd stop which is the Red Coconut in Ft. Myers beach. It's a sardine can full of RVs but good location.

Then up to Ft. Desoto for a week and on up to Manatee Springs and around the bend to Top Sail.
We'll salvage this trip even if it's shortened.
We'll most likely head west next year.

Gulf State Park in nearby Gulf Shores, AL is a nice alternative, albeit a bit more expensive. Beautiful park, great paved trails to hike or ride bikes, stunning beaches.

We were in Gulf State Park yesterday. Surprised at the number of open sites, but they said they had lots of cancellations due to all of the rain in December and the first week of this month.

Love Gulf state park.
Have not been there in the winter tho...
Might see what the DW says and if she's interested, I'll check availability for next 2 weeks.

I'd hate to make other plans and then they find the $$$ and suddenly my 1st pick is back on the table.

I've been known to spend a few days at one and then move to the other.

We had reservations to Fort Pkickens the day the goverment shutdown took effect. Reservations got cancelled and park and campground got closed. I'm glad they closed it as a lot of national parks that stayed open to public are getting trashed due to no supervision as employees no longer on the job and enforcing the rules.

Didn't sound like they were any closer to a deal last night on the tele....
I managed to score 4 nights on Sanibel Island. I've probably called there 2 dozen times. They don't have a wait list you just have to call and if they've had a cancellation you could get lucky!

Have you tried Highland Hammock in Sebring? the SP is so large they usually have at least a couple of openings. You might also inquire about there no hookup area. Sebring city is a great place to find area restaurants.

Highland Hammock and other state parks nearby all full.

I grabbed the remaining 6 days I needed at The Glades RV resort, Moore Haven.
$49 a night. Not too bad for prime time.

Now I gotta call recreation.gov and see about a refund.
