Gatlinburg in the Fall

We are new to RVing and will be headed to Gatlinburg in October towing a 2006 Surveyor with a Chevy 2500...coming from Birmingham, AL. What would be the best route to take into G'burg? Will be staying at Twin Creek RV Resort. Thanks for suggestions!

I think your best bet would be to drop down from I-40 on 66, may not be shortest route, but probably the easiest.

I agree. I would take 75 up to Knoxville then 40 east to the Sevierville exit. There are plenty of signs. They want you there.

Exit 407 (Hwy66) off I-40 is going to be the easiest to get into that area.

That is the way we have gone in the past when traveling WITHOUT the RV. I remember how heavy the traffic is thru Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. Had wondered if it would be quicker going thru Maryville/Townsend/Wears Valley. Thanks for the recommendations!

Road from Townsend thru Wears Valley has a mountainous portion that has very steep curves. Personally I would rather deal with the Exit 407 traffic than try that route.

Gatlinburg..

My wife and I were just there a weekend ago...if you have not been before..might want to check a new camping area right there in Pigeon Forge...Up the Creek...it is fairly new and all the campsites are very, very large, as compared to most which are very, very small...full hookups and off the beaten path with no road noise at all...Do yourself a service and check them out..we are going back in the fall for sure....

Route

If you take the 407 exit off I-40, then to Up the Creek, its like six miles, no hills are valleys..plenty of gas stations, walmart, and resturants a plenty and some great activities...much easier than trying to go thru Townsend..got there when you drop the coach off...

Another vote for Up The Creek. That is our usual place to camp, and we are only an hour away. As for traffic, it all depends when you are arriving. If you are planning on arriving in mid or later afternoon on a Friday in October, then it could take a few hours to get where you are going.

Highway

We had given some thought of staying, after deciding on Up the Creek, glad we did not...it is very close to the highway and you will probably get some road noise.......we were very satisfied with Up the Creek..

Hope you enjoy, we were there last year, stayed at crazy horse adventure bound campground down the eastparkway (73/321) from gatlinburg. Nice park but not great either, had the slide for the kids that is what prompted it for us. We drove by Twin creek rv resort and it looked much nicer from the hwy. If you do stay there please be sure to provide some feedback if you don't mind. We definetly see ourselves planning another trip down there within the next year or so. What a great area.

We too visited some other rv parks while there a few weeks back...none really show anything about the park and how close the sites are together..Glad we chose Up The Creek...sites are very large...quiet and clean..Young couple that runs the place are very nice..everything looks brand new..we plan to return there in the Fall...

Does Up the Creek have a trolley stop? One of the reasons we chose Twin Creek is because we'll be spending most of our time in Gatlinburg proper (as opposed to Pigeon Forge) with a day visit to Cade's Cove. We liked the fact that the trolley stops at Twin Creek so we wouldn't have to deal with parking in town. Has anyone else out there stayed at Twin Creek? What did you think?

Up the Creek is great! You cannot drive any stakes in the ground or use rugs, but that wasn't a problem for us.

Some places prohibit rugs because it kills the grass, so I guess that explains the rug rule. I don't know about the stakes and such. They just said we could not drive anything into the ground.

Up the creek

The rug rule is not necessary, the use concrete pad patio's, so, if you put down a rug of some kind, you do not need stakes...
On the Trolley Question..just a short walk up to the corner you can catch it there....

We have camped probably 5-6 times at Riverside. We love it. We have met some wonderful people and enjoyed the fact that it is so close to I-40 and not in the hustle-bustle. Time of day/year makes a HUGE difference in traffic between I-40 and Gatlinburg. To me, it's always been worth it. I really love the area, tourist traps and all.
