Georgia Mountains

The wife and I are planning a vacation in September to head north to the Georgia mountains. We have never been to that area and we are looking for suggestions on campgrounds and places to visit.

Not sure where you are going . But...
We use to own a membership at Horseshoe trails campground at Mountain Lakes. This is located outside of Helen Georgia in between Helen and Cleveland on Alt 75 I think it is. The place is private, but I think anyone can rent, but not sure of pricing. The place is extremely clean and we'll maintained. We just did not get to go that much so we quit and sold our deed. The sites are small, but they are paved will full hook ups and cable. You cannot hardly get dirty there!
Another place close to there that a friend of mine loves is Vogel State park, it is right outside of Helen. I have been there, but never stayed so I cannot comment on that.
Helen has some fine dining options, not a lot, but some nice ones.
Good luck!

We live in the NE GA mtn area. Vogel State Park is more north of Helen located in Union County south of Blairsville. We haven't camped there but have used the park for day use. Lake, trails, playground for the kids. Close to the Appalachian Trail. A couple of other parks in Union Co - Mountain View RV Resort. We stayed here just last week as we were on our way home when a heavy storm came through & we could not get up our road. They are Passport America so it was quite reasonable with the discount. Very nice, level concrete pads. Beautiful setting. They are selling the sites but the owners do not give a sales pitch. CG is easy access & much to do in the area. No cable. Another park in Union Co is Trackrock. This is a camp for a getaway. There is also a horse stable here. Lots of locals like to use this cg. Beautiful setting. They are also PA.
Towns Co has a great Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds cg located on Lake Chatuge. Very convenient & again lots of locals due to the lake access & events at the fairgrounds.
NE GA - beautiful especially spring, summer & the colors of fall!

We stayed at Trackrock a few years ago. It is near Blairsville. Very nice and the sites are very spread out.

You have 4 state parks in Northeast Georgia. Vogel State Park is 8 miles south of Blairsville on Hwy 129--tough drive from the south. Black Mountain State Park is mountain top in the far NE--south of Dillard and north of Clayton. Moccassin Bend State Park is a small, quiet campground waterfront on Lake Burton--west of Clayton. There's just 6 miles of 2 lane hwy. from Atlanta to Clayton.

Unicoi State Park is 2 miles NE of Helen. The membership campground, Unicoi Springs Camp Resort, will give you two free nights mid week in their five star resort. Helen has good restaurants, water parks and $5 tubing on the Chattahoochee.

Many go all the way to Western NC and East TN to the mountains. Northeast Georgia is absolutely breathtaking, and the place has a great atmosphere.

Spent a good bit of time in north Georgia. You almost can't go wrong with Georgia State Parks or Corps of Engineer Parks albeit you forgo the full hookup. In the central part of NG, Vogel is good and Trackrock is good. In the western part Cloundland Canyon, Fort Mountain, and Doll Mountain. In the eastern part Moccasin Creek State Park, Tallulah Gorge, and Blackrock Mountain.Blackrock Mountain is a fairly steep climb and I think is limited to 25 ft RV length.
There are plenty of private campgrounds just check up out.

If you like to explore/hike, especially for waterfalls and mt views...you can't beat NE GA area.
Black Rock Mt SP and River Vista campground are two good choices in this area

Dahlonega, GA is the most quaint of mountain towns. It has a great town square and is known for it's origin as a gold mining town. RRanchga.com is located 6 miles from town center. Outside of town square, like 2 miles, you have a super Walmart. RRanch is 800 acres; horses, all types of amenities and VERY scenic and relaxing. 150 RV sites. Passport America. Been an owner there for 7 years. Check it out.

The website for RRanch did not show rates for rv sites. On PA website, the discount is good for 2 nights with a 7 day max stay. Normally $25 a night - PA discount = $12.50 + $2.50 a night usage fee. I take it that this is a park that is selling memberships and selling rv spaces as well. Of course, going thru Atlanta from the southwest, what about the roads going up from Atlanta?

R Ranch

$15 each of first 2 nights; $27.50 each added night up to 1 week.
Around Atlanta, I 285 north and connect with route 400 to Dahlonega. From there it's route 19. Website has best way to R Ranch.
AVOID 285 and 400 around Atlanta from 4 to 7pm. Time yourself so you enjoy the trip outside of rush hour. It's always bz near Atlanta but thins quick once on 400.
R Ranch is strikingly scenic, tucked in the foot of the mountains.
You will like it there!

Mountain Vista is a really nice RV park, and it's located in a beautiful location. We often drive by there going to a creamery 4 miles north of Dillard that milks their own cows and makes their own ice cream. It's the best.

We're part of a membership owned deeded campground 1/2 hour west of Dillard--Unicoi Springs Camp Resort at Helen. For the $325 yearly membership fee, we can camp 14 nights per month for free--March until December.

Our yearly cost will get you 8 nights at a nice commercial campground like Mountain View. And we have 300 campsites, two pools, an incredible clubhouse complex and a very active social program. It's just a first class, reasonable price place to go.

Corp of Engineers parks on Carters lake are good half price if you have a Senior Pass Doll Mountain,Woodring. Also All state parks across North GA are very nice Moccosin Creek State park good location in North East area close to several other State Parks with lots of beautiful scenery in each park. Went there last year and went to almost every state park within about 100 miles most are less than that distance. We will be at Doll Mountain for 10 days last of September. Also State parks have a 25% discount for Seniors

Yes as long as you have the senior pass or its equivelant for federal parks. Reserved my place about 3 weeks ago for half price. It pays to get old some time!!

I do not know of a bad campground in Ga. Mtn's. R ranch is by far the best we stayed at. The sites were perfect. If you get by the creek the sound is relaxing. The staff and campers were so kind and social. We are coast to coast members and stayed for a week @ $15 a night. The hair pin turn going into the camp ground requires you attention. Yes will go back but have so many others to visit first.
Try getting the Ga. Mtn Mag online for great info or the county web site.
Don't know when the Oct fest starts in helen, which brings mega traffic.
Enjoy!!!
