Getting Away to the Poconos

Leaving tomorrow for 10 days of R&R in the Poconos, Otter Lake Campground. Never been in that area and looking forward to exploring the area and towns. Any recomendations as to some good local area (non chains) restraunts?

No restaurant recommendations- I've only been in that area once and it was many years ago at an old run down resort (non-camping). It was likely beautiful in its day.

But, we did go checkout a number of waterfalls in the Delaware Water Gap. They were beautiful. There was one that I wanted to check out better, but dropped our map on the way in. I didn't want to make a wrong turn and go from a 1 mile walk to a 10 mile hike.

If your into the micro brewery scene, barley creek is a pretty good place to eat. Or, it was when I was there last, about 5 years ago. Can't really think of any other place out that way, but I haven't spent a much of time there.

Live in the Mount Pocono area here. Have to agree that Barley Creek microbrewery is a nice place to visit, also there is the Tannersville outlet mall located on 611, exit 299 off of 80. Mount Airy Casino, also located on rt 611 south of Mount Pocono. If you are looking for some gift shops, there are the Christmas factory and Country Kettle, both are located on business rt 209 south of Marshals Creek.

The Strasburg RR is down in Lancaster County. OP will be near Stroudsburg and E. Stroudsburg. Not really near each other, common mistake. There may be another RR attraction in Stroudsburg, I know Steamtown Nat Park up in Scranton runs train excursions to Stroudsburg several times a year.

Mt. Airy is worth a short trip from Otter Lake, you might even catch a show of someone semi-famous.😄. OL itself is very nice, if you can get a waterfront site, it's even better: LF24 is the best site, but LF25 and 26 are nice too.

Shopping: someone mentioned Tannersville, but didn't do it justice: there's a boat load of outlet stores there: clothes, shoes, girly stuff, the Bose outlet (my fav,) and others. Don't go on the weekend or you'll be fighting NY-ers in traffic and for parking--they descend on the place in droves on the weekend!

There are a few non-chain type restaurants on Rt 611 near the outlets, Pocono Brewing Company comes to mind--good food, good beer, good wings! Smuggler's Cove is another, good seafood place.

Have fun!

Ugh...I hate to be the one to bring it up as I want to only say positive things but I will regret not mentioning it so you can be extra aware.....the Poconos is where the Eric Frein manhunt is still ongoing. Not sure where exactly so maybe nowhere near where you are headed....
Just be careful.

Yep...OP is pretty much heading right into the search area. The shootings of the two troopers happened about 15-20 miles north of Otter Lake, closer to Lake Wallenpaupack. The guy has just managed to vanish like a fart in the wind up until this point. Dude definitely has some skills.

When we stayed there we went to Bushkill Falls. They have different trails at different paths and lengths amongst the falls. Kids loved it, my legs hated it. I'm a flatlander.

Thanks for the warning, but we got back way before the trouble started. We were at Otter Lake Campground, and had a great time. Did go to the Falls and went as far as my old knees would allow. Wife went ahead for another 2 hours.
Getting ready for probably our last trip this year. Leaving Friday for Va. Beach. Planning on going to the Nauticius Museam and tour Norfolk Naval Base. Hit the boardwalk for a day, and head home to winterize the Lexi.

You're not the only person who should have looked at the original posting date. Oops

Have fun in Norfolk, that's a nice area to go. They put alot of money into the waterfront the past 10-15 years and it shows. Nauticus is a really nice place, there is also alot to do in the VA Beach area as well. Have fun, I just put mine away for the winter here in NEPA.
