Gettysburg KOA campground directions

Any suggestions on driving to Gettysburg KOA campground from the East? I'll be on the turnpike. Do I just bite the bullet and drive through downtown Gettysburg or is driving down 81 from the turnpike worthwhile?

I've stayed on the eastern side of Gettysburg (drummer boy) and we drove in on 15 from the turnpike but the KOA is on the western side of Gettysburg.

We have always just drove thru town. Some I know go down 15 into Md then back but that seems pretty far out of the way, we were going to Granite Hill but west just like the KOA

Thanks dblr. Every other route just seems out of the way. I know downtown can be congested.

We have never stayed at the KOA but we are regular tent campers at Granite Hill. We never go through downtown unless we are actually going downtown. It can be very unpredictable so for me personally I don't mind the extra time to avoid the stress. We live in Maryland though so the decision is easy for me. Walmart is on the northeast side and we have been known the need things. We go in from the Emmittsburg side 140 to 116.

Not much help for you in your situation I know but that's what I do.

We'll be coming in for the 4th of July weekend and staying over at Artillery Ridge just south of town and not far from the Copse of Trees. I've been to Gettysburg before but never with a TT and the thought of traversing downtown scares me a bit.

Just think of it as another challenge. I have done it a few times with our 39' 5th wheel but been known to push some cars back that cross the white stop line

I'll wager that your 39' 5th wheel has a tighter turn radius than my 36' TT.

We come in from Ohio. We have found that the turnpike to 15 is best, then thru town. Never had a problem, though there is a traffic circle to navigate. The Gettysburg KOA is a nice place and conveniently located once you get your bearings around town. I realize you are coming from the east, but tip to anyone coming from the West, don't get off early and try to drive from Breezewood area to Gettysburg over 30. Made the mistake of following my RV GPS , went that way and it cost me a set of brakes coming down the mountain. No such problems coming down 15.

Your probably right but with a full size Kenworth pulling it most people want to move.

We're taking 84W to Scranton, 81S to Harrisburg and pick up 15S.

Ditto to the suggestion by Martsing. You can get to MD Route 140 off of 15 at Emmittsburg. Proceed straight through town on 140. Once in Pennsylvania turn right onto 116 which is good road all the way to the KOA or Granite Hill (have camped at both). Just watch for the signs to the campgrounds. The turns come up quick and there are few places to turn around. Granite Hill accepts Good Sam.

We stayed at the Gettysburg Campground last year, which was very nice. We only have a 23' expandable (when closed) and the right hand turns through town can be very tough. Plus they were doing some construction on some of the streets.

Have a great time in Gettysburg we did.

Thanks everyone

I think I'm going to take route 30 straight through town (no turns other than the circle) then left on knoxlyn road and follow the KOAs directions from there.

I'd be worried trying to make a right hand turn onto route 116 in town. And I only have a 23 foot camper.

That right turn is tight and if someone is past that stop line it can be tough.

Been there, no issues

The downtown is not too bad. Best in the morning if possible. Just take it slow and you will be fine.

We're actually there/here now. Been here since Sunday. Got off I-81 onto 30 and headed stright east to Knoxlyn Road. Just follow signs. No problem thru town or on 30. Bit of traffic, but not heavy. We're in a 28 ft towing a toad.
Here thru till Thursday. If you get here look for the Lexi with a silver Subaru Crosstrek. Come by and say Hi !
Just reread your post about your comming from the east thru town. Was there today sightseeing and saw no problem with driving thru town, especially the circle.

Glad it all worked out.

We will be at Granite Hill CG over 4th of July weekend. NOT going through town!! Of note, another incentive for us to take the southern route is the"Frontier BBQ" place at the corner of 140 and 116. AWESOME!!

Yeah, one of the nicer campgrounds we've stayed at. Senic, lots of trees for shade, large spots with tree/rock barriers between sights. Restrooms spotless.
Unfortunately, rain yesterday, and sitting in rain now. Not pouring, but enough to keep us under awning.
This campground is on our "re-visit" list.

An update to my original post. We drive through town east to west on route 30 to get to Gettysburg KOA with no problem. Their is some good signage on 30 after town so you won't miss the turn.

Campground is small but very shady. Nice stone base for the sites.
