A park we stayed at had an active bear population (to dw's delight, me not so much). Best advice the ranger gave me was to hide or disguise any coolers - keep in back of truck or at least cover with a tarp even if the cooler only has water or beer.
Bears learn to associate coolers as a potential food source and will enter the site to check it out. What you want to do is to keep the bear from entering your site in the first place. They are on a mission and won't waste time unless they think the potential is there.
This is in addition to the other common sense things like not to leave food laying around.
