Harrisburg Pa to Outer Banks

Heading to Outer Banks from Harrisburg in a few weeks. Thinking rte 81 then 64 would be best. Do you agree?

Also thinking of leaving Friday afternoon and driving a few hours then finishing the ride on Saturday morning. Any recommendations for an overnight stay along the way?

Was there last summer I would suggest 81 to 66 to 17 to 95 very easy and good 4 lane roads and no big hills , I think it is one exit (130B) off 95 you will have a walmart on Carl D Silva pkwy, have stayed there a few times. Install app RV Parky in your phone for all types of overnight stops walmarts, cracker barrel, campgrounds plus gas or fuel pilot, flying j and others.

Thanks. I have looked at the map and agree with your suggested route. I guess from I95 I will be taking I64 to the banks.

Are there any bridges or tunnels where I would have a problem with having the propane refrigerator running?

All of the tunnels in Hampton Roads have propane restrictions. You will be required to stop at the tunnel entrance and they will ask you to turn off your propane. Can't have propane on inside the tunnels.

I have no problem with turning off the tanks for a short time. Its good to know what to expect.

Looking forward to the trip as we are first time owners and have only done a 2 night shakedown trip so far and this will be a week with the grandkids.

I live in Richmond, Va., and will suggest an alternative route which will save you from tunnels and the nightmare that is the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. (No one I know uses I-64 to go to the beach in the summer. It's crowded with Yankees coming down from Pa.)
Seriously, take I-295 off of I-95 north of Richmond. Exit I-295 and travel Rt. 460 to the Suffolk by-pass, to I-64. All of this has signage directing you to the Outer banks. (Stop at Cowlings BBQ in Wakefield for some sho' 'nuff smoked piggy.)
Now, if you really want to go "native" and use the route folks who own property down there use, take Rt. 17 off of I-64 to South Mills, then SR343 to Camden, then Rt.158 to Barco, Rt.165 to the Outer banks.
17 to 165 is a flat, easy drive through the country. No traffic.

Adds 9 mi. to your trip and removes 99% of the head/heartaches.
Oh, and please don't tell anyone about this route. It's a local secret.

Was at the Outer Banks last year for a week. Came in from another direction from WV. Stayed in Rodanthe....Picture on my signature is a double rainbow overlooking the ocean there.

When you get to Richmond if you take 295 around, toward norfolk, but go past the exit for I64 to US460 off of 295 you won't have to go thru any tunnels and will miss the heavy traffic on I64. We take 460 all the time. You will come out on664/64 just follow the signs for the outer banks It is a much less stressful drive than 64. Enjoy your trip.

Been to the Outer Banks once ten years ago and I still have nightmares of sitting in traffic on I64. Great job to those who suggested alternate routes. OP, follow their advice!
