Hatteras To Staunton VA routing

Just asking....

We'll be travelling by motorhome and toad scheduled for late April, early May.

What route do people suggest for the following btwn Hatteras and Staunton?

I see the route from Highway 12 to Roanoke Island then two State Route 64 bridges between Roanoke Island and the mainland, and then over to I-95. Any one better than the other or RV restrictions?

Any advantage to heading up to Norfolk area and I-64 out to Staunton?

Either route looks like a 5-6 hour drive time route. Either route have toll charges for bridges or such?

Thanks all.

I would take HWY 12 to I 64 west and stay on it, by pass Norfolk cross over the Monitor and Merrimac tunnel ( propane restrictions ) go through Hampton and head toward Richmond. Take 295 around Richmond ( no need to hit I 95) and head toward Charlottesville. Staunton is just the other side of Afton Mountain. No tolls not a bad drive. The tunnels have a propane restrictions. You will have to stop before the tunnel, and they verify your propane is turned off. Come to thiink of it there is a new toll road coming out of hatteras near Va Beach/ Chesapeake line. Its a by pass road it does cut out some traffic, I do not recall how much the toll is I use easy pass. Its probably a good 5-6 hrs .

SR 64 is OK, 55mph mostly, through small towns and swampland, but you travel right far west to pick up I-95.
I live in Richmond and when I travel to Hatteras towing my 30' TT, I use a route with no tolls or tunnels. Here it is https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Hatt...9576!3e0?hl=en
This avoids all the choke points and is a pleasant, scenic route. Great rest stop on the Dismal Swamp canal that serves boats and cars.
