Heading To Las Vegas From Worcester, MA

We will be travelling to Las Vegas in 3 weeks with a 2 day stop in Topeka, IN for some repairs to our Cedar Creek 5th wheel.

From MA to IN we are planning to travel I90

From Topeka, a southern route, to avoid possible bad weather, would be best. We hope to arrive Las Vegas 5 Days after leaving Topeka. (2 drivers)

This is our first cross country trip and any recommendations on routes to travel would be appreciated. Interstates and major highways are preferred.

Thanks.

Avoid Chicago at all costs.

Go down to Indianapolis, over to I-57 and I-70.......go west, then I-80, and down south on maybe I-15. Do Mapquest and check out various alternatives.

Stay off interstates and really enjoy the trip. Rt50, The Lincoln Highway, is fantastic. Pick it up down in PA

Have a safe trip

The fast way; dropdown to Indianapolis, I70 to St Louis, I44 to Oklahoma City, I40 to Kingman, Then US93 to Las Vegas. My mapsoftware shows that to be 29 hours driving time so that would be 5 days of fairly easy driving.

The Scenic route; US 66.

The alternative is a combination of the 2. You could do some research on US66 to see what parts you really want to see.

Be advised...........after driving 12,000 miles across America from one side to the other in the last six months, the absolute WINNER for claims of "Worst Road" is I-40 in Arizona. They actually have signs everywhere that say "Rough Road"!!! No attempts to fix it, and no orange barrels in sight!

The semi trucks in front of you are scary......they drop out of sight in the pothole in front of you, then slow down and reappear right in front of you. Just plumb scary.

Just did I90 through NY, $57 toll with 5th wheel, but good driving.

Chicago generally not bad between 7 pm and 6 am, also generally not bad from 10 am to 2 pm.
If you want to avoid Chicago from Topeka IN, I would go west from Topeka to 31, take that south to Indianapolis, then Interstates of your choice.

Thanks to all for your help

Thanks to everyone for the info. It was very helpful.

I was particularly uncertain as to the best route to St.Louis from Topeka.

I never thought to head south to Indianapolis.

Thanks, again!

The weather should be real nice in late October. If you take I-40 across New Mexico the colors should be spectacular. Mid- September to mid-November is the time when the sun and shadows produce some really colorful, breathtaking scenery.

If there is bad weather (snow) at Flagstaff, swing south to I-20 at Oklahoma City then to I-10 to Phoenix AZ, across on US 60 to Wickenburg then up US 93 to Kingman. The Phoenix to Kingman trip is very scenic. I-40 is a bit rough in AZ but not as rough as US 180 out of Springerville to St. Johns to Holbrook.

You might also try the two lane highways across West Texas and New Mexico for some very scenic driving. Be aware that on the two-lane highways, the distances between fuel stations can be up to 70+ miles and it can be expensive in the more remote area (Western New Mexico).

I'll ditto post#4 for the most part in spite of rough sections on AZ I-40. I'll suggest picking up I-80 at Gary, IN, to I-55 west of Joliet, IL, to St Louis, catching I-44 to Oklahoma City picking up I40 to Kingman, AZ and Hwy 93 up to Vegas. Much of that route parallels Historic Route 66 between Chicago and Santa Monica, CA. We've enjoyed the many mid 20th century memorabilia locations through most all of that entire route to and from the WEST COAST. Several of the other suggested routes have lots of merit as well. We're never in a hurry these days and we find ourselves on secondary roads quite often taking the "road less traveled" much to our satisfaction. Pick up some appropriate travel guides and dive in! A lot out there on Route 66 and AAA tour guides have served us well too.
