We had a GREAT trip. We were at Hocking Hills during the week so it
wasn't crowded at all. We had severe thunderstorms all around us one
day and night
No hail or wind damage but it was close! That made the little water falls
in Hocking Hills SP nice and noisy! Place filled right up on Friday. Some
yah,hoos moved in and kept slamming their trailer door way past midnight.
Sound of AC wouldn't even cover it up. Bummer.....
Really enjoyed the hike and discovering this park.
Thanks to Dave_Monica for suggesting FourMile Creek SP NY. Would not
have known about it but for Dave's help! CG was nice but not special. It was mostly grass with just a smidge of gravel in spots. Some mud holes and some puddles but we had a decent site. Place was full on weekend but only 25% on week days. Shower house was very nice but had a tiny, muddy parking lot. We'd give it 3 stars out of 5. It was saved by GREAT
location! Great View over Lake Ontario. We could see Toronto skyline across the lake. Wonderful! Reasonable price- a bargain even.
We had TOTALLY AWESOME day hiking along the Niagara River on the NY
side. Walking along the whirlpool and rapids was great. Got some good video of the FAST water! It's amazing to stand on a rock on the edge
of the river and look out at waves that are higher than you are! That's is a
lot of water in a hurry to go somewhere else!
Recommend a few hours to ride the Erie Canal boat tour in Lockport. I've been thru
locks on the Ohio river and thought it might be boring. Wrong. We both
found it informative and interesting and fun!
We had no issues at all crossing the boarder to from US/Canada.
I did wonder if the US guys are taught to always look stern.
Canadian customs gal was much more friendly.
Had my passports in hand- sun glasses off! got thru in just a couple minutes.
Warning DON'T PULL PAST THE STOP LINE when you are one back from
the booth!! Sheesh. I rolled up a little too close to the car in front of me
and the guy came right out of the booth and yelled BACK UP NOW!!!.
I won't do that again!! CCTV was pointed at his rear bumper and I
accidentally pulled up and blocked it.....
Pinery Provential Park was another great stop. It was 25% occupied during
the week. Streets were bike friendly and they have miles of bike trails.
The beach on southern Lake Ontario is hard packed sand and it goes on
for MILES!! You can walk all day on the beach! Early in the day you might
not see anyone for a mile or more. Afternoons there were some folks
who drive in to use the beach but definitely NOT crowded.
On the weekends it filled up! Got a little noisy but tolerable. Good stop
for us.
I agree that poison ivy must be the state flower in Ontario! It was EVERYWHERE. I had a tough time just plugging in my power cord and
not touching it. I'm highly allergic but managed to not get any!
If you go I recommend eating at SmackWater Jacks tap house on the river in Grand Bend ON.
Smackwater Jacks - Eat and drink at the water's edge. We sat on a bar stool outside overlooking
the marina. It was fun watching the boats come and go and the food
and drink were wonderful!
Last stop Holland Michigan state park. We had a decent site not on the
beach but problem was there was a noisy busy street just yards outside
the fence from us. We had total privacy due to trees and brush but
the speed limit went from 30 to 45 right next to our site so every
hot rod and motorcycle was gunning the throttle as they passed us.
We had to sleep with windows closed and AC on Sunday night.
Monday the traffic was gone and we had nice windows open weather
the next 3 nights. Beach is huge and soft sand. Not great for walking
but fine for lounging.
Holland MI is a very nice bicycle friendly town. Don't miss a visit to
tunnel park. It's a good ride from Holland SP to Tunnel park via paved
bicycle path.
All in all a good trip. (We've never had a bad one!!)
