One does not get used to it. After being laid off from Boeing in the big 1971 downturn, I was "lucky enough" to land a job with one of the contractors at NASA-Langley Believe me, after only 6 weeks of unemployment, compared to some of the guys who were laid off earlier than I was, I did feel lucky.
Even better, the new job included paid relocation to VA. We bought a new(ish) car, sold our #2 car to someone in the neighborhood and turned in the keys of our rental house to our landlord. We watched the movers pack our stuff, then got in the car and headed east, with our three young children. We got to Hampton on Memorial Day weekend.
The first day I started work at NASA, when leaving home at 07:15, it was foggy, 81 degrees and there was a thunderstorm in progress. To a west-coaster and ex-pat Brit, no way could all this occur simultaneously. Wrong!!
Although DW and the kids enjoyed the warmth, we all had trouble with the humidity, the mosquitoes and the afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Three inches of rain in 45 minutes and 15 minutes later that rain is all hovering at about 5-feet!
After almost three years, Boeing called and invited me to rehire. We were on the road within a week! We've lived in Western WA ever since and, now retired in Anacortes, have no plans to move anyplace else, unless wearing a wooden overcoat!
