I-540 around Raleigh

Planning a trip from central N.C. to the Outer Banks. My GPS and all the other mapping programs I have tried are routing me right through Raleigh instead of going around it to the north on I-540 and then coming back onto US 64 to the east of Raleigh. Anyone know why the mapping programs are discouraging this? Thanks.

540 is not a toll road. Get on from I40 west of Raleigh and it is no toll all the way around north Raleigh.

Actually staying on I40 is the shortest way, as long as you avoid weekday commuter traffic. I40 is not too bad although there is some construction. Your choice. I540 is longer but a better road.

My bad it looks like it's only a toll road near cary/apex area. NCDOT: Triangle Expressway I've paid tolls on it before and thought it was tolls the whole way around. Guess I was wrong, haven't been out that way for a little while now.

540 from 40 to 64 is about a mile / 1 minute longer. Most GPS don't take traffic into consideration. They just look at distance and time. 85 in Greensboro is the same way. Most GPS doesn't recommend the by-pass to Charlotte. Waze does pretty good, but you have to be careful. It will take you around your bottom to get to your elbow at times. 540 is much smoother. Just be careful at the end. The last turn to 64 is a doozie.
