I81 southbound to Asheville recommendations

Have an opportunity to get away to the Asheville area for part of the Memorial Weekend and the following week. We have reservations at Mama Gertie's.

Looking for recommendations to Mama Gertie's off route I-40.
We will be coming west/south on I-80.

Would it be better to hit I-77 near Wytheville and continue south on I-77 to I-40 at Statesville and then follow west towards Asheville...

... or...

Continue to follow I-81 to I-26 near Kingsport and follow I-26 south to Asheville and back slightly east on I-40?

It's been years since we've been in that particular area.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure about the best route for you, but others will be. Just wanted to say that you will love Mama Gertie's, especially if you get one of the "view" sites at the top. And it's the most well-kept campground we've ever been to. If I owned a campground, this is the way I would run it.

Also, great restaurants and shops nearby in Asheville and Black Mountain.

Thanks, we didn't get one of the upper level sites as another couple will possibly be traveling with us and we wanted sites closer together. I had read other positives about Mama Gertie's so it was our first choice when calling for reservations.

Have a place called Sam's Gap on I26 between Johnson City and Asheville up hill to 5,118 feet, not a bad grade and of course all four lane. Wonderful drive and lots to see. I would take I81 to I26 then to I40.

There is one fairly steep climb on I-26 as previously mentioned, but it has truck lanes so no problem there. I drive both routes regularly and prefer the I-26 over the I-77. There is also a bunch of construction where I-77 and I-40 come together and it can get a bit ugly traffic wise.

Thank you brother Forbes. I like your profile pic and have been to the East myself.
Thanks wahoonc, sounds like solid advice.
Appreciate the feedback.

Just noticed I mis-typed in my original post that we would be coming down I-80... that of course should have stated I-81. I later mentioned it correctly. We'll be coming down from the Winchester - Harrisonburg, VA area where we will be spending Saturday evening.
Sorry for the confusion.

Momma Gerties

We can there quite often. It is off exit 59 on the south side up a twisted and narrow road.

I would take 80 to 77 to 40 so you do not have to backtrack at all.

You can go to 26 but then you have to take 240 around Asheville and then 40 East.

Travel safely.

Being a truck driver I have been both ways an I would take 26 because, l77 has Fancy gap steep grade down hill going there & l40 has Black mountain steep uphill. I 26 has some pulls up and down but not as bad. No matter what way you go check your brakes ‼️ Poo
