You will have to pay parking fee when you enter island for however many days you stay.

Do I have to pay parking fee if my truck is sitting in the camp ground??
What if we ride bikes and don't drive a couple days. Do we still have to
pay parking on those days?
Not a deal breaker just curious.

Yes, you pay a vehicle fee for your entire stay on site...whether you drive daily on the island or not but should be a reduced fee for week long stays and longer.
When you first arrive, the vehicle fee is collected before you get on the island @ the toll plaza.

X2 That authority would not let a chance go to collect some money.

Gotta love google....

Jekyll Island Parking Fees Rising

Looks like $6 per day but $28/week makes it a little less painful.

I see the beach parking at Tybee Island also went up from $1.50 to $2 an
hour. We stayed there in 2012 and it's on our short list to
go back to. We were able to haul our stuff on bicycle and avoided
the high parking fees a couple days. When we did drive we paid up.
They were very prompt about checking meters and issuing tickets!

We are at Jekyll island campground right now. The fee to enter the island is per entry, not the number of days you stay. If you come and stay a week and not leave the island you do not have to pay again. If you plan to leave multiple times to go to say St. Simons island you may want to check out the other pass options.

We have been camping here 2 times. No problems with ticks but if it is dry it can be dusty. Lots of shade. Wonderful bike paths around the island. Well maintained and paved and most of all for me..FLAT, no hills.. LOL

If you are a Diners, Drive Ins and Dives fan there is a BBQ place on St. Simons you might want to visit. Southern Soul BBQ. Of the round a bout by the airport.

Check out the historic area of the island. This is where the money makers of early America built their hunting lodge and winter residences. Rockerfeller, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, etc had "cottages" here. Look more like mansions to me. This is also where the Federal Reserve was created. Just check out the meusem and historic sites.

Thanks Don! That fee makes more sense. I thought it strange that they
would charge a "parking" fee even if my truck is parked in a paid up
camp site. But parks and others are getting more "creative" in ways to
snip away at our camping budget.

Thanks also for the tips on where to eat and what to see.

I have to be honest here-- we had planned to go in Feb 2014 but after
considerable web surfing looking at historical weather data for Jekyll vs
FL panhandle area we opted for Top Sail Hill Preserve one more time.
Average temps and cloud cover days are very similar to both places.
Jekyll averages 2 inches less rain in Feb.... but otherwise the numbers
are similar.

Miles from home were a major factor.
We can get to Santa Rosa Beach area of the FL panhandle in 1 long day.
Jekyll island is definite 2 days each way.

DW retires in a tad over a year. Once she's come to the light we can be
much more versatile in when/where we go.

Thanks again and by all means-- Happy Camping!

Hey Dan, your welcome. We have never camped at Top Sail but several of our friend have. One of the nicest campgrounds you will stay at. It used to be a private campground but went out of business and the state took it over. Paved roads, pads for camper, 3 way hookup and close to beach access.

Another great campground is James Island County Park in Charleston. Probably to cold in February but check it when warmer.

Yeah, it's awesome when the weather cooperates! We've been there 3
times in Feb. First year we had GREAT weather. Hot even several
afternoons. Last 2 times it was ok at best. Several cloudy cool drizzly
days. According to weather data we have a 50/50 chance of good
weather that time of year. I'm hoping the odds swing in our favor in 2014.
It was a tough call fer sure.
We wanted to go further south to Sanibel Island FL but I called last week
and they are booked solid Feb and March. I knew that was likely.
Last Christmas eve morning I called and they had a 5 day cancellation
and we did go there!
Awesome weather and a great 5 nights/4 days. Bicycled all over that
island!
Moved back to the panhandle for our 2nd week and had mediocre weather
at best.

Gotta risk it (panhandle in Feb.) one more time and then we'll be able to go early spring
or more likely October/early November.

We WILL get to Jekyll one day so your recommendations are not wasted.
