Jekyll Island GA camping?

Dreaming of next winter. Even tho the average Hi temp for February
is only 63, we're probably gonna risk it.

Anyone stayed at the RV park on the North end of Jekyll Island GA??
Here's a link- Locate Camping Facilities on the Georgia Coast - Jekyll Island, GA Jekyll Island

We like to bicycle ride and walk the beach as well as some local interest
sight seeing. We're empty nesters so kid attractions are not necessary
this trip.

Been there?? Done that?? Tell about it!
Bonus points for photos!

Thanks!

Nice rv campground----------------

We have stayed in the RV park in question. The only problem is two things you have to be aware of. The Racoons will drag away any and everything. A family was next to us in a pop-up used a large marine cooler for their cold items, meat, eggs ETC. The racoons raided the cooler removed everything!!!
A fellow next to the pop-up had a cooler also with a slab of ribs, steaks, he had used a bungee cord to keep the lid closed. The bungee didn't even slow the "CRITTERS" down for the racoons promptly remove the bungee cord and all the meat.
The second problem is "TICKS", the ground is covered with pine needles which is the worst infestation I have ever seen. So if you have children and pets, check them closely for ticks.

The campground is great for bicycles around the Island. Great bike paths all over the island.

Have Fun

Camped there many years ago when we lived in another part of Georgia, but can't remember too much about it except that our site seemed rather private. I'm sure others will be more help.

I'd recommend the short drive over to St. Simons Island to dine at The Frederica House. Great fresh seafood in a nice atmosphere.

We were there once, many moons ago. The CG was a little rustic, but nice. Some sites have close trees, and will make you to exercise your backing skills. Here are a couple pictures for those bonus points. (Yes, that is an Outback in our pre-Rockwood days, and hope the weight police don't notice we were towing with a 4Runner)

Great place to bike, sightsee & beach walking but personally wouldn't camp at their campground for reasons mentioned above and the campground is so littered with leaves and very sandy.

IMO, setup @ Coastal GA RV Resort & drive in to Jekyll & St Simons Island (approx 20min drive)

Thanks everyone! Real nice to see pictures too!!
Looks like the CG on Jekyll is rustic, gravel and maybe shade.
Not sure about shade in Feb but still there is quite a contrast
between there and Coastal RV resort.

We don't have kids or pets (at home anyway) and don't mind rustic so
we probably will go for the one on Jekyll. We'd definitely like to be able
to bicycle to the beach as well as all over the island.

I will show this to my DW and let her make the call.

Looking forward to it already and the weather in Kentucky is pretty darn
nice right now!

If anyone has a favorite site number or thoughts about that let us know
please!

The campground is nice for biking and fishing from the pier. Long walk to beach and the sites are a little crowded IMO. I don't really like the beach or water in this area. Quiet place but I will never go back. I stay mostly upper gulf with beautiful water and white sand.

You may want to make reservations as soon as your plans are firm. They have lots of long term snowbirds and may be full some of the time. We stayed at the Jekyll Island campground in February, 2012, and we were lucky to get a site that would accomodate our Sunseeker 3100.

Also, there's a daily $6 "parking fee" to be on the island. We had to pay this even though we were in the campground. I think they have a lower weekly rate.

If you can't get into Jekyll Island, Blythe Island county park is not far from Jekyll. It's also rustic but the campsites are not as crowded Jekyll. It doesn't have the beach, bicycling and touristy stuff like Jekyll. It's just a plain park whose main attractions are camping and fishing.

http://www.glynncounty.org/index.aspx?NID=176

I was surprised that there were long term residents at the Jekyll campground. That's not allowed in any state park that I know of. I was also puzzled about why it was not listed in the Georgia State Park guide or website. It turns out that the campground is not a state park, even though it is listed as such in some places, and there are state highway signs pointing the way to "Jekyll Island State Park". The entire island is owned by the Jekyll Island Authority. It is operated separate from the state.

Jekyll Island is considered a State Park, but it is privately operated so the same rules for State Parks do not apply. Stone Mountain near Atlanta is the same way. I think as long as you stay on the island you do not have to pay the daily parking fee, however it has been a couple of years since we have been there. We have never camped there, but would like to try it out soon.

You will have to pay parking fee when you enter island for however many days you stay.

Do I have to pay parking fee if my truck is sitting in the camp ground??
What if we ride bikes and don't drive a couple days. Do we still have to
pay parking on those days?
Not a deal breaker just curious.

Yes, you pay a vehicle fee for your entire stay on site...whether you drive daily on the island or not but should be a reduced fee for week long stays and longer.
When you first arrive, the vehicle fee is collected before you get on the island @ the toll plaza.

X2 That authority would not let a chance go to collect some money.

Gotta love google....

Jekyll Island Parking Fees Rising

Looks like $6 per day but $28/week makes it a little less painful.

I see the beach parking at Tybee Island also went up from $1.50 to $2 an
hour. We stayed there in 2012 and it's on our short list to
go back to. We were able to haul our stuff on bicycle and avoided
the high parking fees a couple days. When we did drive we paid up.
They were very prompt about checking meters and issuing tickets!

We are at Jekyll island campground right now. The fee to enter the island is per entry, not the number of days you stay. If you come and stay a week and not leave the island you do not have to pay again. If you plan to leave multiple times to go to say St. Simons island you may want to check out the other pass options.

We have been camping here 2 times. No problems with ticks but if it is dry it can be dusty. Lots of shade. Wonderful bike paths around the island. Well maintained and paved and most of all for me..FLAT, no hills.. LOL

If you are a Diners, Drive Ins and Dives fan there is a BBQ place on St. Simons you might want to visit. Southern Soul BBQ. Of the round a bout by the airport.

Check out the historic area of the island. This is where the money makers of early America built their hunting lodge and winter residences. Rockerfeller, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, etc had "cottages" here. Look more like mansions to me. This is also where the Federal Reserve was created. Just check out the meusem and historic sites.

Thanks Don! That fee makes more sense. I thought it strange that they
would charge a "parking" fee even if my truck is parked in a paid up
camp site. But parks and others are getting more "creative" in ways to
snip away at our camping budget.

Thanks also for the tips on where to eat and what to see.

I have to be honest here-- we had planned to go in Feb 2014 but after
considerable web surfing looking at historical weather data for Jekyll vs
FL panhandle area we opted for Top Sail Hill Preserve one more time.
Average temps and cloud cover days are very similar to both places.
Jekyll averages 2 inches less rain in Feb.... but otherwise the numbers
are similar.

Miles from home were a major factor.
We can get to Santa Rosa Beach area of the FL panhandle in 1 long day.
Jekyll island is definite 2 days each way.

DW retires in a tad over a year. Once she's come to the light we can be
much more versatile in when/where we go.

Thanks again and by all means-- Happy Camping!

Hey Dan, your welcome. We have never camped at Top Sail but several of our friend have. One of the nicest campgrounds you will stay at. It used to be a private campground but went out of business and the state took it over. Paved roads, pads for camper, 3 way hookup and close to beach access.

Another great campground is James Island County Park in Charleston. Probably to cold in February but check it when warmer.

Yeah, it's awesome when the weather cooperates! We've been there 3
times in Feb. First year we had GREAT weather. Hot even several
afternoons. Last 2 times it was ok at best. Several cloudy cool drizzly
days. According to weather data we have a 50/50 chance of good
weather that time of year. I'm hoping the odds swing in our favor in 2014.
It was a tough call fer sure.
We wanted to go further south to Sanibel Island FL but I called last week
and they are booked solid Feb and March. I knew that was likely.
Last Christmas eve morning I called and they had a 5 day cancellation
and we did go there!
Awesome weather and a great 5 nights/4 days. Bicycled all over that
island!
Moved back to the panhandle for our 2nd week and had mediocre weather
at best.

Gotta risk it (panhandle in Feb.) one more time and then we'll be able to go early spring
or more likely October/early November.

We WILL get to Jekyll one day so your recommendations are not wasted.
