I've never stayed at KOA West, but I've been to East a couple of times. I don't know about the cabins, but the RV sites are very tight because of their proximity to other sites. It is very close to the highway but making it even more noisy is the fact that trains pass close by in the wee morning hours.
On the positive side, it is very flat because it is located in the Swannanoa Valley. It is also very conveniently located between Asheville and Black Mountain, which are both very cool places to visit. I believe KOA West is in a more rural area near Canton.
Our favorite campground in that area is Mama Gertie's Hideaway in Swannanoa. Sounds peculiar, but it is a first-class campground with great cabins. It's very near Highway 70, but way up on a mountainside, where the sites are nicely terraced and wonderfully landscaped. So it's still very close to both Asheville and Black Mountain.
Mama Gertie's is immaculate. I've seen workers cleaning the cobwebs out of the underside of picnic tables after a camper checks out, and even wiping off the sewer cap to make sure everything is perfect. The cabins are in thick woods and most facte a wonderful creek. You can check them on their website. We have stayed there many times and have friends who loved the cabins. However, no pools or playgrounds for the kids. This is a very quiet and scenic place.
