Lake Placid NY

Spent 4 days at North Pole Resort campground in the Lake Placid area. Really enjoyed our stay. We hiked cascade men., drove to the whiteface mountain highway and visited the Olympic sites. Lake Placid is a great little village with a lot to see and do. Can't wait to visit the area again.

Love that area, but I did not love when the elevator up to the very top of Whiteface broke down while myself, my 11 year old daughter and the operator were in it trying to go back to the base. Ended up having to walk the "nature trail" off the mountain. We really enjoyed the North Pole Resort too. Definitely a great area with all kinds of things to do and see.

Did you have to purchase a ticket to drive the highway? I read online you do but I don't see anything on google maps that looks like it would stop you from just driving on it.

Yes you do. We had purchased the Olympic passport so it was included.

Thanks! I will look into that. I will be up there in about 2 weeks. I have been up there several times to hike the 46'ers but have never gone up to Whiteface. Figured since I saw your post, why not.

It was nice. We hiked up Cascade Mtn. Took us about 3 hours to go up. We don't rush. Great views at the top. Passport was good for going up ski jump, Cloudsplitter Gondola at Whiteface Mtn and also the mtn road. I think we paid about 40 per person. We also went to the Ice skating show on Saturday night.

Not too far past Santa’s Workshop, the road splits around Lake Stevens.
The road to the left has the entrance toll booth for driving further up this road. It’s the Veterans Highway on the way up to the top of Whitface Mountain.

Take your time up and back. Beautiful scenery in both directions. Don’t drive and be the photographer. Also.....take your time....it’s not a race. Make sure to use a much lower gear on the descent to save your brakes. If not....it’s going to get very expensive after that pungent smell.

Recommendations on Lake Placid area campgrounds? We’ll be out way in mid September.

What are you looking for? There are several options. The KOA in the area is not horrible even though I'm not a fan of KOA's. There are some state parks in the area also. Stayed at one about 40 minutes from Placid and it's a nice drive.
