Looking for campgrounds in FL panhandle
DW and I will be on a road trip to the Florida Gulf Coast next month scouting potential campgrounds to spend winter of 2016. Trailer Life had a nice article about campgrounds near Carabelle Beach and Appalachicola so we will begin our search there.
I'm hoping forum members have some recommendations to check out while we are in the area.
Tired of cold weather in Cincinnati and thanks in advance.

There are some along 90 in Panama City. Aren't great but they are across from the condos and beach. No particular recommendation, just do a search.

Anastasia State Park at St. Augustine
Absolutely gorgeous. The Camp sites are sculptured into tropical foliage. close to ocean.
Another one is Talbot State Park

We've done that but are looking for first hand experiences along this route.

We have stayed in Navarre, I think it was Emerald Beach Resort. It was nice there are 2 others close by. Good luck!

Florida panhandle campgrounds
We like to stay in state parks when possible. Check out St. George Island and St. Andrews state parks, they are both in the panhandle and are great places to stay. I would suggest making reservations since they are very popular parks.

Topsail. reserve State Park just East of Destin. Just as nice as Anastasia and in the Panhandle with a private beach

There is also St. Josephs Peninsula S.P. & Topsail S.P. Topsail used to be a private resort but is now a State Park- full hookups. Go to Florida State Park web site; a lot of good info there & can reserve through Reserve America.

we've stayed at emerald beach resort as well. our 1st experience at an "RV park" (we were such newbies, we didn't know there was a difference!!). anyway, loved it there. a few sites just a few steps from the private beach, many pull-through sites. the weekend we were they, they had their own seafood festival, absolutely delicious. seemed to have a lot of activities available. restaurants nearby, other campgrounds all along rt. 399. we plan to go back . . . btw, they have a facebook page you may want to check out . . . btw #2 - orginally from the toledo area, so i feel your pain! who can forget the blizzard of '78???

several on the "forgotten Coast" ie Mexico Beach , Port St.Joe , Cape San Blas.......this is the area that we live in during the winter.........We are actually in Howard Creek which is a fish camp north of Port St Joe there is a small campground. Not much to do other than fish and hang out

We love Perdido Cove RV Resort and Marina just west of Pensacola on Perdido Key. Beautifully manicured sites, paved, clean, wonderful. The best part is that it's on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Lots of dolphins, shore birds, boats, barges--very, very interesting. Not cheap but worth it. You can stay there all winter without having to move.

We also stayed at Emerald Beach RV Park. Very close to restaurants and Publix Grocery. Extremely clean park, has very high Good Sam numbers. We stayed there 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. It has its own private beach on the intercoastal waterway.

This will be our 5th year doing the panhandle during Feb and March. All the FL State parks are great in the area. Our favs are St George Is and St Joe Peninsula because they are just yards from unspoiled beach access. As far as u can see is perfect beach and ocean. Best tip i can give u is too reserve early as spots fill up fast. Only bad park is in Destin and only because 4 lane road is only 100 yards or less away so we dont stay there because of traffic noise. Reserve 11 months ahead of arrival. Wife and i are currently near Sarasota at Myakka River sp for first time. Really nice here. We will be in panhandle by mid Feb.

If you plan to WINTER on the Gulf Coast, and you are even fortunate enough to get the parks you wish at the time you choose, you are limited by LENGTH OF STAY. You will be a moving! Get on Reserve America as previously suggested. You get lucky on Winter in the Gulf as that is the off season. There are holidays and they get bz around them. Many of the smaller boutique style business that give the area character are closed and owners are in MIAMI, NAPPLES or KEYS.

Ho Hum RV resort
Ho Hum was properly named but reasonably priced cute little parking lot right on the water in Carrabelle. Not a lot to do but walk around & chat with your neighbors or fish off the pier ....very nice & quiet. No beach but we did watch a small shark fin swim on by 15 feet from the camper (was cool not scary) and one of the older guys hooked something really big that he never landed but it was quite the battle & fun to be there for.
Right down the road from Apalachicola for great oysters (the real reason we went) and just really nice people throughout. Our view was great from the 'honeymoon site'

Grayton Beach State Park is very nice. Henderson Beach State Park is also but hard to get in there. Topsail SP is very good.

This is my 5th year at Carrabelle Beach RVC and it is great. Great clean park that has access to the beach that is never crowded, great office folks.

We are currently on our way to the area. Left South Dakota Tuesday and are now in a campground in Tupelo, MS. We have reservations Feb.1 for 4 days at St. George Island and then two weeks at Port St. Joe peninsula. We then plan on going west along the gulf to Texas then north to central Texas where we will stay until April.
We spent a long weekend in the Apalachicola area last year after reading an article in Trailer Life magazine. Love the area and the oysters.
