I haven't stayed at either one, however it is the region that I camp in the most. I will say Maine does a decent job of running/maintaining the parks, but some of the commercial ones are pretty good. This is my default campground:
Cupsuptic Lake Park and Campground located in Rangeley, Maine managed by the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust. They have sites from FH to W/E to tent to remote island. And, it's a nice place if you have kids. Another choice a little farther east is Cathedral Pines
Cathedral Pines Campground | Eustis, Maine, also managed by a non-profit.
Will be at Cupsuptic all of next week and Cathedral Pines in September. If you're looking for a place that you are 4 miles from the sign that says you're 8 miles from nowhere....this is the region! Enjoy Maine!
