Has anyone come up on a Low bridge and have to find a different way around. Or held up traffic

Not personally, but I have friends who got caught by one on their way to Maine. I wasn't there, but the story goes that they had to wait for a police escort and then backup quite a ways until they could get turned around.
I did drive up a "mountain" in Huntsville that had a horrendous switchback. We made it, but I took over every last bit of road to do it. It was within the first couple of weeks of owning my camper.
My wife scopes out routes as we go now.

low bridges
We had a police escort when we went to Virginia beach we were on the Chesapeake bay bridge we stop at one of rest areas we were going south on the bridge .this where I went wrong when you come out of the Tunnel you turn right in to the rest area and then you are heading north in the rest area then you cross over the highway now I am heading south in the rest area not knowing that there is no room to make a u turn with the trailer on the back of the truck so the police had to close the north bound traffic so we could cross the north bound lane to get in the south bound lane to continue south .

striper44, you got caught there also. With the RV and car trailer,52 ft. long. I did a bad, made my own turn with out them. I knew ahead of time the size of the lots and made a left turn heading south!

Yes, twice. Once in Star City, Arkansas and once in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Both were smaller towns and both were ancient railroad bridges. We saw the one in Arkansas in time to pull over and plot an alternate route. In Clarksdale, we went down a hill and around a curve and there it was with no warning. We had to back up several hundred yards; uphill and around the curve. My wife went out to get traffic to go around us as we backed up against the flow of traffic. When you get to out-of-the-way places, these things happen.
The worst for us actually has been steep, elevated railroad crossings on rural highways where I was afraid of getting hung up in the middle. Re-routing would have involved LOTS of extra miles.

Yep, entering a small town in Montana. Just before entering the town was a railroad bridge marked 12'6". At 13'2" I knew that was not going to end up in my favor. Luckily, I was able to back up enough to take a few side streets and up and over the tracks.

My GPS will route you around low bridges and tunnels. The GPS is an RV unit and is updated at least three times a year. You do need to put in the parameters of the RV such as weight, height, width and size and number of propane tanks. Twice my unit has told me I was on a highway where I should not be driving on. I forgot to switch over to car instead of RV/Truck. So I guess it works!

Yes. The first day out with new MH. I knew of one low bridge near home so I took another route to try and get around it. Voila - another low bridge, but by the time one sees the sign, it is too late. Tried to turn around on a small two lane road with a 30 ft coach. Level lets hit the uphill driveway, which I tried to use to turn around. Someone was kind enough to direct me to back into a driveway across the street. Rush hour traffic. Fun.

This has only happened in my worst nightmare! I try to plan well, and I also have a GPSr that should alert me to low clearances and other hazards. Although I haven't faced such a scenario, I think the situation only requires a cool head and some patience. We all are aware when others are waiting behind us and it creates some pressure.

Been there and done that in PA. Now scope out the route before and went old school with a trucker atlas. Shows all low overpasses, tunnels , tunnel restrictions and highlights all trucker routes. If they are allowed so am I.

Get a Garmin RV 760 LMT and configure it for your rig. Then buy a truckers Atlas and refer to that. And if you see a road sign that says "No Trucks" whatever you do, don't go there.

Yep. Louisville Metro KOA, On the way to Goshen 2014. Stock Truck GPS routed us down a *NARROW* road with almost no shoulders. A 9' bridge stood between us and the KOA
The KOA manager was going to the bank, stopped and said she would guide us to the "correct" route to the KOA...AFTER I backed our 33' 5er up and turned around
She was even kind enough to get out of her truck and tell the 6 vehicles behind us to BACK UP 60 or so feet
25 min later we were turned around (can you say 123 point turn around LOL) Got to camp, set up, had some burbon (wait...got to camp, had some burbon THEN set up! ) Logged on to Amazon and had a Garmin RV 760LMT drop shipped to the Goshen Fairgrounds. Never Again!!

Glenn,
Rand McNally. Here's a Link:
http://www.amazon.com/McNally-Deluxe...ers+atlas+2016
That's the deluxe, laminated, spiral bound one. You can get a less expensive paperback for @ $20
