Question Maine to Myrtle Beach

The DW and I are going on our last camping trip for 2016 on Nov. 11, from Maine to Myrtle Beach, SC. We are planning on going by way of I95, I495 (in MA), 290, 90, I84 to Scranton PA, and south I81, spending the night in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Once in Harrisburg, not sure if we should take 15 towards DC and eventually reconnect to I95 or continue down I81 eventally spending the night in Greensboro, NC. I am trying to avoid the I95 corridor in NY, NJ, Balt/DC.
I am hauling a 30' TT with my F150 EB. Any insight, suggestions would be greatly appreciated
A big thank you in advance

They're rebuilding I-84 in Waterbury, CT. Expect delays when you come through there. If you hit it at rush hour AM or PM expect to sit in traffic for a long time. We went to Myrtle Beach this past summer and I though I'd try running down the same route you're looking at with the exception that I went over 209 in PA instead of over the mountain in Scranton. 81 is a long way around. We go to FL every winter from New England and as much as I hate New York, New Jersey and DC we go I84 to I287 to NJ Turnpike. Once across the Del Mem Bridge we run down 301 and follow that until it meets 207 in VA. A few miles later back on 95SB just north or Richmond without having to deal with Baltimore or DC traffic.

I second what Forester Fred said about I-84. We just came back home that way going Northbound and the south bound side was a mess, long delays down south of Hartford. On the way down south we had left on a Friday afternoon and we didn't hit too much traffic then. Either way I-84 has become such a pain the past few years. You could try taking I-91 to I-95. Even with having to go back up to I-287 it will still be easier.

We live in between Philadelphia and Harrisburg) and this year we decided to take I-81 instead I-95 through Baltimore and Washington DC and we enjoyed the no traffic. Cruise control the whole way. In Stanton we took I-64 over to Richmond (a beautiful ride over the mountains). It took us 12 hours with 3 stops to Myrtle beach.

Take US15 from Harrisburg all the way into Virginia to Opal where it joins US17. Then US17 to I-66 near Manassas. Get off 66 onto SR234 to Dumfries to pick up I-95. Use I-295 to get around Richmond.
Sounds screwy but once you see this route on a map you'll see why it works. We used this route several times last year to go to upstate NY from Richmond.

We've driven from NC to to Boston and highly recommend staying of of I-95 as much as possible. Especially around DC. We lived there and traffic is a mess no matter what time of day you go thru there. I -81 south was a good drive as far as traffic goes.if you want to get back on 95 after DC I recommend I-81 to I-64 around Richmond to I-295 toward Norfolk. Stay on I-295 the end, it turns into I-95. That will get you around DC and Richmond without heavy traffic.

Aaannnddd...2 more scenarios (just to add to your brain overload).

Route 1 - I90 west into NY, I87 south, I287 south into NJ, I78 west crossing into PA. I78 ends/meets I81 about 20 miles north of Harrisburg (missing the mountains in Scranton/Wilkes Barre), I81 south to U.S. 17 in Winchester, Va, U.S 17 south to I66/US17 east (3 miles) then back on US17 south meeting up with I95 near Fredricksburg, Va, take I295 around Richmond back to I95 south to I74/US 74 east at Lumberton, NC to Rt. 410 south to Rt. 701 south to Rt. 9 east to Rt. 31. From Rt. 31, you can get to wherever your destination is from North Myrtle Beach to south of Myrtle Beach. (Rts. 410 & 701 are 2 lane roads but are short runs) (there are a few short hills to pull leaving Winchester but, after that, it's a beautiful ride through horse ranches & vineyards of Virginia).

Route 2 - I90 west to I88 south to Binghamton, I81 south thru Scranton/Wilkes Barre, Harrisburg, (more mountainous) to Winchester, Va. then, same as above.

Variation A - Stay on I81 past Winchester to I66 east to US 17 or continue to I495 but, there is a long uphill pull right from I81 to US 17 and it's still close to DC.

Variation B - Stay on I81 south all the way to I64 east to I295 to go around Richmond, Va.

Either way, travel safe & have fun when you get here (we're here until April).

IF it was me I'd avoid the DC area altogether and go on down to I64 to Richmond or I77 to Charlotte.

I hate that DC traffic. Unless you are planning on going thru there between 11pm and 5am.

We are planning a June,2017 Trip from WV to Maine. We live near I 81 so we will start there and go north. Then what would be the best route to go. We are pulling a 40 footer 5thwheel. Worried about the distance. We are so used to the trip to Myrtle Beach every year. Never had more than a flat tire. Wanting to try something new. We have to up state NY and loved it. Thank you in advance for being nice. If there is a forum on this I didn't find it.

Maine 2017

SStaub,
We just completed our trip to Myrtle Beach and had a great travel. I am glad we went i84 to i81 (even if it increased our travel time). If you are coming to Maine in 2017, I'd plan the trip to travel through Hartford, CT BEFORE morning rush hour. It might be ok mid morning or mid afternoon, not sure. i84 is somewhat confusing as you travel thru the middle of the city but hang in the middle lane and you can't go wrong . Catch i90 in MA but get off on i290 (Worcester) to i495. From here is not usually any issues. Maine has some beautiful campgrounds but state and NP ones fill up fast. Acadia NP (Bar Harbor) is awesome but the sites are boondocking (they do have dump stations and fresh water near sites). Acadia has a new site (just opened this last year) so not as popular but they DO HAVE full hookups. I have heard good things about this site. I find both state and NP are better set ups (more room per sites) but the private ones are good too. Not sure if you are doing the coastal thing or inland, but Acadia NP has a GREAT bus system that is FREE! Let me know where you are going and I can give you some pointers

Sstaubs, you sound just like us. We've gone to myrtle beach the past two years from Pennsylvania and this year we took a trip to lake George New York and loved it so we booked a two week trip to bar harbor Maine and white mtns New Hampshire for 2017. Enjoy your trip.

Discipline if your referring to Schoodic Woods NP campground it has only electric and water at the RV sites.Other than that it is a great campground with new bike trails that connect with the one way drive that edges the coast along Frenchmens Bay. The RV sites were all pull thru or parrallel and generously sized. The tent sites all have electric and could fit a small RV. We really enjoyed our stay there

I wanted to eat lobster and this year we went to Bar Harbor Maine by way of Intercourse, PA to Niagara Falls to Bar Harbor. I saw a pink wagon for kids in Intercourse and I swung back by and brought it for my great granddaughter. It was a great trip. We started out in North Carolina where we live, we took 3 weeks

We only have a week so it Bar Harbor. If the HUBS doesn't hate the traffic to much then we are planning a longer 2019 trip back. We love up state NY Lake George is beautiful, we stayed in Scroone Lake for our trip and it was like walking back in time. We just loved it. Enjoy your Christmas.

Thank you so much. Acadia, Bar Harbor area is on the list for sure. Do you know if this route has any height restrictions. I have read on hear that somewhere in Conn. that there are, but it wasn't clear which road.
Thank you for the offer of pointers I will be picking your brain soon. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
