Michigan...Lake Michigan or Lake Huron Route

Planning our Sept/Oct trip from Va. to So/No Dakota/Wy.
Plan on traveling home via northern route thru Minn and Wisc into the Michigan UP. Plan on coming down thru Mackinac/Mackinaw.
From there need input as to best/senic route. Which would be nicer, 31 down the west coast of Mich along Lake Michigan, or 23 to 25 down the east coast of Michigan along Lake Huron?
We will not be under any time or mileage constraints, just looking for the nicest route down.
Right now we're leaning toward the Lake Huron route as, on the maps, looks to be a bit more rural, and right on the coastline for a good part.
Any input would be welcome.

I have an RV lot in Cedarville, MI, UP on Lake Huron.
It is closed for the winter on October 1st. I would
think that you are correct regarding Lake Huron but you
could get some cool weather in October. Have a great trip and good

If you take 31 be sure to stop at Sleeping Bear Dunes.

I have done both and they are great. My personal choice is the Lake Michigan side. Especially if you want to stop at a beach.
