Depending on where you are coming from the west coast of Lower Michigan is very nice. Stop in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and visit Traverse City. Mackinac Island is worth a detour. In the U.P. make sure th see Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rock National Lakeshore, the trip up to Copper Harbor is worthwhile. Porcupine Mt State Park is (IMHO) the best state park in Michigan. Enjoy

Downtown Iron Mountain, Mi has a museum with a huge steam pump engine, and about 9 miles east of town is an iron mine you can go into on little railroad cars.

Cornish Pumping Engine and Mining Museum

Iron Mountain Iron Mine

Make sure you try a Pasty! (No, not pastie!)

Muskelong State park is awesome. Easy driving distance to Tequamalon Falls and a little drive to Pictured Rocks

Whitefish point in the up is a great stop too. Has a shipwreck museum. If in the Mackinaw city area the Mill Creek Campground is one of our favorite places to camp. Has a view of the bridge and free shuttles into town where you take the boat ferry to Mackinac Island.

diesel in ontario

All excellent information! Thank you.
Now additional questions.

Diesel availability and cost across the border?
issues with u.s.$ /Canadian$ exchange?
I assume just purchase with credit card for automatic conversion?

thanks in advance for your input!

Ern

Diesel is readily available in Canada, but not cheap. But then nothing is cheap in Canada. Wait! We found the cost for FHU campgrounds was actually cheaper than here in the USA. I recall we paid $35-40 Canadian per night.
No issue with money exchange. I would suggest you go to an ATM and withdraw cash. It will be Canadian money. Yes, your bank card company will charge you an exchange fee. Be careful about spending US money as they will not give you the exchange rate, and any change you get will be Canadian.
We stopped just short of the USA border and spent all our Canadian money. Find a deli and have lunch.

Crossing the border either way is no issue, but you must have passports to return to the states. And, don't even think about taking any kind of weapon into Canada. This includes firearms, Mace or any long bladed swords or knives.

If you use a credit card make sure there are not foreign transaction fees. They add up quick and are 3% or so of anything you purchase on some cards. Many airline cards have none. You will also need to know your pin.

Have fun going across the bridge if its windy soend the cash to have them drive your vehicle across. Yeah read your card terms they will soak you with fees. I like the Houghton Hancock plenty to do with copper mining in that area. You have to hit da tourist trap in Ishpeming. Maybe some of da yoopers will be there.

Pictures rocks are the must. Camp in Munising. BUT... Instead of taking cruise to see the pictured rocks, rent a pontoon boat. They are surprisingly affordable and they will bring it to your camp site if on water. Yes.. it is more than cruises but if there are enough of you, it is very close. Also, you can do soooooo much more with pontoon boat. You can stop at deserted beach and hang for a while and enjoy the area to its fullest.

Hi,

There is a small but delightful municipal park in Ontanogon, with sites that are just steps away from the shore of Lake Superior.

FWIW.
