I'm the same way about Gatlinburg. Drove over there when we were in Pigeon Forge last August....SO disappointed. Turned around at the first available spot and came back to the RV park.
I was there in the early 70s. It was beautiful then....chalets were abundant and it had that small town appeal. Now? junk shops non stop, people elbow to elbow, and traffic bumper to bumper. No thanks.
IIRC Gatlinburg was more like a honeymoon destination back then.
We drove over to Cherokee the next day, went to the Cherokee Village, etc.
We stayed (as mentioned several times previously) at Up A Creek RV park outside Pigeon Forge. It's OFF the strip, at the base of the foothills, mountain creeks coming down both sides of the park. No city lights, quiet and peaceful...small park...35 spaces. But still close enough you can run back to the strip for shows, dinner, etc.
There's a convenience store 2 miles away for ice, soda, etc., and yep, you CAN get pizza delivered there!
