My rant about MD and their hellacious tolls

While I traveled from southeastern pa down to myrtle Beach last week for 8 days i got bent over on tolls. In Baltimore I had to avoid the tunnel due to propane tanks so I took the key bridge...... 12 bucks each way and then the 95 north toll at port deposit area....24 bucks. Unreal! Not a single toll thru dc, va, nc, pa, or sc. Just good ol Maryland! Felt like NYC rates to me

That is why I take 695 W to avoid the bridge.... According to google it is only 7 minutes slower and 24 dollars cheaper. I thought the same thing last week Went from here to GA and only around here did we hit tolls every ten feet it seemed like... I remeber reading somewhere once that 75% of all the tolls in the US are in the NE!

Does anyone know of a comprehensive list of tunnels with propane restrictions for the USA? That would be a useful planning tool!

Don't go north then thru NY. The thruway will charge you the rates as if you are driving a tractor trailer.
You could have jumped over to Rt. 1 in Md. and cross at the Conowingo Dam, narrow but no charge, some folks don't like it because of how tight it gets.

It is better to plan ahead for these tolls as they are irritating. Sort of like bank fees, doctor procedure fees, disposal fees, gas deliver fees & electric delivery fees. It does get old real fast. We have found ways around the MD tolls including DE, PA, NJ & most of NY. It takes a little extra planning though.

We travel up to Kinzer PA every fall from SE VA. I do not go any where close to DC any more. I travel up I-95, I-295, I-95 to US-17 to Warrenton, VA., US-15 to Gettysburg, PA, Rt 30 toward York, Lancaster, Kinzer, PA

I know there are ways around it but having only a week for vaca and already a 10-11 hour drive towing I went with the shortest route. Unfortunately they hosed me on tolls. May do things a little diff next time around

I live here in MD... beautiful state but our govt squeezes every $ out of people it can get. if you hate our tolls you should see our taxes... they even tax the RAIN here now.

I am trying to convince my wife we need to move out of this state but our kids are here and she doesn't want to leave.

For the good folks who are not from the MD area, this isn't the full story. While I have some issues with the tax I am not going into politics here & don't intend to start an exchange. It is sorta like a line Holmes uses on the show Elementary, "it's complicated".

The Beatles had a good tax song way back when - Tax Man. It's still true .

Does the East Coast states have an E-Z Pass transponder system? Indiana, Illinois have this where you drive thru without stopping and get charged 50% or more of the toll booth rate. Last year I paid close to $50 going from Chicago to Goshen with toll booth rates. The E-Z Pass should save me $25 and time waiting in toll lines this year.

Also thanks for the heads up on the "rain tax" just another reason to not move to or buy land in MD.

We do. I know they used to discount the toll a bit for the use of the pass but that seems to have gotten smaller and smaller over time. I think I do still save however. We also have ezpass only lanes here where you cannot get on or off without the pass.

Even if it cost me I would still have it. I remember a trip several years ago when I had a popup and we were in traffic on rt 1 by dover de with my parents in their class a.. They paid tolls (mom was all big brother is watching stuff..) we had ezpass. We got home an hour and a half before them! All because we had the high speed lane and they sat in traffic. I was sold with that!

Yep, They even have a flush tax too... imagine that. You pay it even if you live west of the continental divide in far western MD.

The rain tax only affects those living in counties which line the Chesapeake and factors in the hard surface (blacktop, roof, etc) of a person's property. Not all of us pay it.
Now, the flush tax... that torques me. I have a septic system. By the time any septic water from my property hits a stream, which then flows to the Potomac then Chesapeake, my water has got to be cleaner than anything filtrated by the local waste water treatment plant.

I've lived here over 44 continuous years, plus 2 while growing up. I've told the wife that by the time I hit full So. Sec. retirement, I want to be above the Mason/Dixon line or across the Potomac. I don't care which - just get me the heck out of this state!

Discounts? In MD? Perish the thought! If MD can make money on something, they will sure try.
