NC or SC beach campground suggestions??

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for suggestions on beach campgrounds in NC such as Outer Banks etc. I've camped at Myrtle and want to try some place different, so any suggestions in SC other than Myrtle Beach?? Looking for something on the water. Don't want anything I have to drive to the beach etc. Thanks in advance.

On the Outer Banks (OBX) near Rodanthe, NC are two campgrounds (Camp Hatteras and Cape Hatteras KOA) on the Atlantic side, both have good reviews. My brother-in-law stayed at the KOA last year and said it was a really nice place, walking distance to the beach. Not much in the way of entertainment or shopping, just a few restaurants, but nice and relaxing from what I heard.

This summer will be the first summer we're not headed to the Outer Banks for a week. Instead we'll be heading to Pirateland Campground in Myrtle Beach. When staying on the Outer Banks, we love Ocean Waves campground in Ocean Waves NC on the Cape Hatteras Nat'l Seashore. It's about an hour's ride South on Rte 12 from the intersection of rte 64 in Nags Head, but well worth the drive. Check them out: Ocean Waves Campground
You'll find they are VERY reasonably priced and 100 yds from the water.
You have to call way ahead for reservations. they fill up quick.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check Ocean Waves. Enjoy Pirateland, I visited when I was at Myrtle. Big and lots of campsites. I stay at Apache when go to Myrtle. Older, and not as nice as Pirateland but they allow me to bring my golf cart and motorcycle, and they have a nice pier!

Myrtle Beach Travel park. They don't allow carts is the o my bad thing unless you have a doctor's note. We just leave it at home. Thought about trying ocean lakes but then thinking about all the carts. Which I hear is like a main drag in a city e will keep going back to the travel park

We really don't miss the golf Cart that much when we are there other than when it is time to hit the abc store and Wal-Mart

If you want to drive only 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach, go to Huntington Beach State Park, SC. It's away from the crowds and the touristy beach development of Myrtle Beach. It's on the beach, nice, and close to lots of great seafood restaurants if you don't want to cook. Beautiful Brookgreen Gardens is across US Hwy 17 from the state park if you care for that.

I was looking at Huntington Beach State park. We may try that. Being able to ride the golf cart to the Walmart is nice being at Apache.

Just returned from Ocean Waves CG today. Reasonable in price and they have all necessities. We stayed on site 47 and sites are concrete. Camp Hatteras looked nice but was more expensive. We did not look close at the KOA as it was under going some construction. Frisco Woods is on southern part of island but was hard to tell anything about it from the road.

we camped at pirateland 2 yrs ago. nice campground. I also hear edits to beach in SC is nice. I hear camp hatteras is nice and if you are a coast to coast member you can stay really cheap, otherwise it is big $$$. the koa in rodanthe sustained big damage from the hurricane in 2011 so they had to pretty much rebuild themselves. This means most things there will be brand new.

Thanks Anaro, yea i saw Hatteras was very expensive. I don't think we will go there. I will continue to look at the others. KOA's dont allow golf carts so doubt we go there. Thinking about Huntington Beach. If not back to Apache.

Beach camping

I'd suggest Hunting Island State Park. It will be next to impossible to get into this time of year. Reservations are made a year in advance. You might get lucky if you are planning on being there Mon-Thurs. It is one of the most popular state parks in SC and always busy. Someone else suggested James Island County Park. That is a nice park, but it isn't anywhere near the beach. Maybe 10 miles away. Hope this helps.

Well, all the state parks on the beach in SC are booked up, Huntington booked until Nov. Considering it looks nice, on the beach, and half the cost of most beach campgrounds, I see why. Maybe next year! Back to Apache we go!! Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Happy camping!

Myrtle Beach State park is really nice, too. Site 60 is a huge corner site close enough to the camp store that you can just barely get the wi-fi signal. It is beach side too. I made my reservations for last June in December.

dbarr I have been wondering about Myrtle Beach State Park. We always stay at Ocean Lakes but wanted to try someplace else. Have heard good and bad about it but mostly good. I have a feeling the ones that were very negative were perhaps there during some event that just made it a bad situation.
