NC to Ohio to Niagara falls

My wife and I will be traveling from NC to Cedar point in July and then up to Niagara Falls, I am looking for places to stay for a night on the way to Cedar Point, Somewhere in West VA or Ohio. Also if anyone can recommend a place on the Canadian side that is nice and close to the falls let me know.
Thanks

I can't help you with the US side but if you want stay close to the Falls, then the Niagara Falls KOA would be a good choice. If you are travelling with kids, you could look at Sherkston Shores near Port Colborne. We've stayed there 5 times and our teenage boys always enjoy it. It's a half hour drive into Niagara Falls.

There are many threads here on the forum about things to do and campgrounds in the area. Just do a search on "Niagara Falls". Personally, I'd stay away from tourist traps like Clifton Hill and opt for Niagara-on-the-Lake, the jet boat ride and the Butterfly Conservatory.

Or you can stay in the U.S. and camp at Branches on Niagara on Grand Island, NY or the G.I. KOA and day trip it into Canada. That way you don't have the hassle of going over one of the bridges to Canada with your rig. Both places are a 10 minute drive to Niagara Falls. Also, there is a very good state park 12 miles north of N.F. called 4 Mile Creek. $28 a night with electric but no s/w hook ups. Your camping pass gets you into N.Falls state park and the worth going to Fort Niagara SP, 4 miles from cg both with no additional charge.

I am partial to state and federal parks. I assume you are traveling via I-77. Looking at state parks in Ohio near I-77 there is Wolf Run State Park ($24/nt) near Belle Valley and Salt Fork State Park ($27/nt) north of Cambridge, OH. Salt Fork is one of Ohio's premier state parks and so it fills fast on holiday periods. You can reserve a site on line at either.

Smile Canada & Ohio Campgrounds

Here are a couple nice areas to camp at:
In Canada: Home | Bissells Hideaway
In Ohio: Camp near Dayton and go to the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB. Great place to visit with lots to see.

To go into Canada you will have to have a US passport. We loved the American side of the Falls the best. The park is beautiful and you can move a short distance and have a different perspective. Even ten feet can make a difference. The Canadian side of course has the best view of Horseshoe Falls and shouldn't be missed, but the rest of Niagra Falls there is very commercial and reminded me of Virginia Beach with all the shops and fun houses. And, it was very crowded. Don't miss Cave of the Winds and the boat ride, as well as down river at the whirlpool. I'm sorry, but we did not camp, so I can't help you there.

Please do not bring your own firewood. We have a number of insect infestations like the emerald ash borer. Moving firewood is not permitted. Just buy your firewood locally. It's really not expensive, especially with the current exchange rate, and you can save the weight and space.

No fire wood to be brought into Canada. There are Emerald Ash borer and it against the law to transport fire wood from one county to another. We have purchased a gas fire pit to use for our campfires because of this reason. Plus you can even have a fire when there is a fire ban in place.

New York and Pa. do not want you to bring firewood not sure about Ohio
If traveling to Niagara Falls Stateside you could Check out Pymatuning SP located in Pa and Ohio, In New York Lake Erie, Evangola sps.
In Canada friends have recommended Port Burwell, There are several CG. just off QEw
just outside of the falls. We visited Butterfly Garden in the last two weeks, that and the surrounding Parks are well worth the visit as are the Jet Boat and Niagara on the lake

A couple of recommendations for camp grounds near Ohio if you come up I75 are whispering hills camp ground in Georgetown ky. It is just south of Cincinnati. New clean and quiet. Several pull through sites. We stay there when going to and returning from NC. If you find yourselves further east, eagle creek marina in Ripley Ohio is our summer site. Nice secure camp grounds but no frills except a free boat ride of I know a fellow FRF friend is coming. Call either campground ahead for reservations. Pm me if you find yourself in Ripley.

Never a good idea to take your own firewood due to the boring ash pests, and their spread. No first hand knowledge, but have heard of huge fines for firewood transportation. Also, when traveling through southern West Virginia, please slow down. We see too many accidents due to too much speed on our curvy roads.

I doubt Ohio has a firewood restriction, I'd check the ODOR website .

They have given up on the ash bores and are pretty much cutting down all the ash trees in the state. Over three hundred at the golf course down my street.
