Need a few campgrounds on my way to Bangor Maine.

We are presently at the Downtown Riverside Campground in Little Rock AR and heading to Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville TN, Wytheville VA, Hagertown PA, Hershey PA, Allentown PA, Newburgh NY, Watertown CT.
We will be taking the I-40 to the I-81 to I-78 to I-287/I-87 route.
Any suggestions on fun campgrounds along the route would be greatly appreciated.

Iggy

We stopped at the Lee Hi Travel Plaza/RV Park near Lexington, VA, on US 11 at Exit 195 on I-81. I heartily DON'T recommend it. The RV spaces were on a hill about 50 feet above the truck parking. Several trucks and refrigerated trailers ran all night. You may was well boondock in a truck stop for free.

During the same trip we stopped at Norrie State Park, NY. Sites were all dry camping. It was okay as a park, but the draw to me was being close to Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Try to go to Old Rhinebeck during their air show. If not, their museum is pretty good.

These may or may not be near your route:

We also stayed at Bar Harbor Campground, ME. It was a very nice place to camp. The riverside sites were cramped and sold out, but the interior ones were private. Some had full hookups, some only water and electricity.

Camden Hills State Park was nice, but I don't think we had any hookups. There may be some sites with hookups.

Salisbury State Park, MA, was nice. It's right on the river and ocean, so it may fill up.

Hickory Run State Park, White Haven, PA, was secluded, with no hookups.

You will enjoy Lobster Buoy Campground in South Thomaston Maine, it is a small privately owned campground, water and electric at sites will need to use dump station. Right on water very lay back slow down campground. Don't expect the playground, pool or TV (unless you have sat), cell phone service is even a little trouble unless you are up on the hill area. Wife and I will be heading back from TN in July for our 4th trip. Wife is from the Fort Kent area, Walagress and moved south to Caribou, lol.

At the VA RT 52 / I81 FT Chiswell Exit (Wytheville VA) Not too far behind one of the Flying Js (1/2mi)(There are 2 Flying Js one exit apart) is an good overnight stop. Fort Chiswell RV Park. Plain not fancy less than a mile off I81 easy in out. Has good reviews.

I'm headed to Maine too and am currently in the Niagara Falls, New York area. We chose different routes so I don't have any suggestions. But if you stop in Washington D.C., I really recommend Cherry Hill Campground. Expensive, but good as a base to explore D.C.

Cherry Hill is great, voted #1 campground several times, has it all.

In Newburgh, NY I would recommend the Newburgh KOA. It is not that far off the Thruway (87) or I84. It is a clean and nice campground. We go their regularly. If you are wine drinkers they have a wine tasting room on site. They also do tours to NYC and West Point. Nice location if you want to visit the Hudson Valley.

If you can, make it a point to see The US Military Academy at West Point. It will renew your belief, in what has helped make this country what it is.

We like to stop at the Hagerstown\Antietam KOA in Williamsport. It's not an easy off-on type of campground but worth the effort. It's real perty and down by a river. It's also very close to the Antietam Civil War battlefield if your into that.

http://koa.com/campgrounds/hagerstown/

There's one campground in Watertown right off rte 6 called Black Rock State Park.

DEEP: Black Rock State Park

Another, right down the road is a private campground in Thomaston called Branch Brook.

Branch Brook Campground - Thomaston, Connecticut

I haven't stayed at either, but they are close to where you want to be.

In PA for the Hershey area you have Hersheypark Camping Resort | In Hershey, The Sweetest Place On Earth. This is just down the road from Hershey park. I was there many years ago so I do not know how it is now.

Along I-78 is Appalachian Campsites RV Resorts but that is less than 50 miles from Hershey so I don't think you will want to to that soon after leaving Hershey. Especially since Allentown is less than 2 hrs past this campground. I do not know of anything in the Allentown area other than a few state parks I have not visited yet.

Last year on our way to Maine, we overnighted at Mohegan Sun Casino in Montville, CT and did a couple days in Freeport at Cedar Haven Campground which is a nice little campground close to town.

Iggy,

If you will be overnighting near Nashville, one of our favorite campgrounds is Two Rivers, a Good Sam park on Music Valley Drive. A short distance from the Grand Ole' Opry, easy in/out (and if you have a toad and don't want to unhitch, lots of pull-thru sites.) Next door to Camping World. And be sure to eat at Cock of the Walk, about 1/2 block from the campground.
