I think your DW is spot on. Traveling should not be a marathon where you stretch your fuel to see how far you can go. If some of the stretches between available fuel stops exceed your vehicles ability then carry fuel if not no reason to.

I always carry 5 gallons diesel in approved container, that won't spill.

It's in back, exposed to air.......

When we had out TT I usually carried a 5 gallon can of gas in the truck bed. Truck has a 29 gallon tank and the V-10 loves fuel.

We had just come thru alligator alley on the way back from the keys and were heading toward Naples on I-75 when we encountered a major traffic back up. I did not need the 5 gallons but we were running on fumes when I was finally able to pull off and get gas.

I feel the diesel is much safer than carrying gasoline around as it has a much higher flash point (126 F vs -45 F for gasoline) although diesel does have a little bit wider flammability range or air to fuel mixture at which it will ignite.

I always carry an extra 5 gallons of diesel (in approved container) strapped down in the bed of the truck when on long trips. I've used it a few times in the past when the GPS directed me to a station that either used to have, but no longer has, diesel or I'd have to unhook the RV to get to the pump to fill up. One time I also forgot to fill up before leaving and at 9pm the low fuel light clicked on ... boy was I glad we had an extra 5 gallons with us! Treated properly, diesel isn't an issue to carry. I worry more about the 2.5 gal gas can I carry for the generator.

We have traveled out west and up into Michigan pulling our 5er. We use two paper books that are sold both in stores and on the internet. The books help us locating diesel friendly fuel stations when pulling our 5er. They are called "The RV'ERS Friend" and "The Next Exit". The RV'ERS Friend covers non-interstate road ways and list stations by cites/towns. The Next Exit covers interstate road ways. Both are worth the cost and are updated yearly.

We plan our fill-ups about 250 to 300 miles apart; so we never run out of fuel. Out West I would fill-up more around 250 miles or so. On my truck I have a 34 gallon tank and get about 11 MPG when pulling. So the tank is around 1/4 to 3/8 full when we stop for fuel.

Diesel will not explode like gasoline; this is not like the HOLLYWOOD movies it is diesel fuel.

I use a yellow Jeri can for Diesel and a green one for unleaded gas, strapped to the bed of my F350. Tank only holds 26 gal and there are stretches of roadway that push the limits of my anemic capacity.
Extensive research showed me that these are the best Jeri Cans out there ( beware of cheap imitations on Amazon or eBay or Harbor Freight Etc)

Gasoline typically doesn't explode, either. Every explosion you see in the movies was rigged.

I hate trying to get through the RV lanes or other at truck stops. We carry 6 plastic 5 gallons cans, which fit perfectly across the bed behind the rear window. We have been doing it for 4 years, same cans no issues.

We just took that route a few weeks ago. There are enough small towns I don't see the need. I was not looking for diesel but gas and have a 139 liter tank. They have had lots of weather this year but sections of washed out roads and shoulders have been rebuilt. Lots of trees down along the south shore of Superior before you get to Duluth.

Eagle cans look great, but round shape makes storage more difficult, i would think.

I'm familiar with us-2 in the UP, Last week construction at I 75, on us2 caused very limited access to gas stations on north side and restaurants on southside. I'm sure it will depend on time of day but if you fill up there you should have no problems reaching fuel supplies in Manistique, Rapid River, Escanaba with individual stations along the way. Don't wait or run empty to remote campgrounds.

Been carrying a 5gal can of fuel for over 20 years on every trip. I have used it many times over the years. A couple of times a 'neighbor' needed a little fuel, and they were glad that I had it. We plan all of our trips, but it has happened that late in the night and we wanted to keep traveling a little farther, it was good to know I had a little more fuel 'just in case'. Take it with you and make it a habit.

Sure wish the Garmin (760RV, I think) had the same feature that was on the Garmin I had on my motorcycle. I could set an alarm for XX number of miles as a reminder to get fuel. When the alarm went off it would show the nearest gas stations.
Now I often set an alarm on my IPhone for 2 hours as a reminder. In most places here in the states it is really not a problem finding diesel. But there are places in the mid-west where it can be 70-80 miles between fuel stations.

That's a good looking trailer.

But why no windows in it?
