New River Gorge WV

Greetings!
I'm hashing out our big adventure for this summer
and saw a PBS teaser for the New River Gorge in
WV.

It is a National Scenic River run by the NPS but no NP
campgrounds apparently.
There are private CGs in the area.
If you've ever been in the area and/or camped there
please tell us about it!
We're hikers, no kids (they're all grown) so we're looking
for "rustic" more than kiddie pools and play grounds.
Electric hook ups would be nice but awesome scenery
and no hook ups can work for us too.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I've not camped there but did visit on our way to florida last fall. Most of WV is rustic and rugged and this area is the perfect example. We stopped at the NPS area and walked down the steps under the bridge - wow, what a view!

I recall seeing signs for campgrounds and seeing RVs.

A couple of years ago we visited Cass (scenic RR - google it). It's a WV state park logging railroad. You can camp on the mountain in a caboose for ~$50. You ride up and back on their train. Rustic? No elec, no running water, no cell phone service, and no roads in or out. The higher camp is more isolated and yes, there are bears. The lower camp has a bathroom and they added electricity lately, but they do warn you that if you have issues in the middle of the night there is no way to get help. You are alone on the mountain. It was awesome.

If you're into RR history there is a lot of it in WV, and logging and coal too.

I have stayed there before, and went white water rafting. It's a very pretty place, and a awesome thing to do with the rafting. Bad thing is, I cant remember the camp grounds we stayed at. I do remember a great resturant that we went to "Dirty Ernies", it's a great rib place. I believe they have a website.

It's over 200 miles from Natural Bridge state
park, KY to New River Gorge WV.

Sorry, my bad, I was thinking of the RED River Gorge in KY. I've been to the New River Gorge area too, but it was a long time ago so can't recommend a CG from first-hand experience. Sorry for the mix-up!

Searched Woodalls forums for New River Gorge and found
this post
Woodalls Open Roads Forum: Beckley WVA Overnight?

I e-mailed
Rifrafters Campground: Camping near New River Gorge Bridge and Fayetteville, West Virginia (WV)
and Randy seems like a nice guy.
As soon as we nail down a firm itinerary for our big
adventure this summer I'm gonna make some reservations
there. (Film at 11 )

Live in WV. Been in New River Gorge area several times but have not camped there. There are some private campgrounds in the Area. Also several state parks are in the area, Babcock, Twin Falls, Pipestem, Bluestone. The state has information on the parks online. The parks vary in what they offer and their condition.

Check this place out. Never been there but found it during a search. No trailers but it sure looks like fun.
