Nh-Poconos-Woodbine Md-to Fredricksburg over Thanksgiving

We are leaving NH tuesday before Thanksgiving and heading south to Florida. Our first stop is the KOA Delaware Water Gap (Been there many time-great host!). The we head to Woodbine Md(Rambling PinesCG)- for 3 days over Thanksgiving! That route is basically going south to I78 west to Harrisburg and then US15 south to 97 south through Gettysburg and then to the campground. When we leave Rambling Pines, we will head I70 west to Fredrick, US15 south until US17 southwest to I95 at Fredericksburg an then cruise 95 south. These are both new routes to me. Are they Okay ? Is there a better way? I’m trying to stay out of DC area traffic the Sat. after Turkey day. First time heading south over winter!

If you need anything over Thanksgiving our farm is a couple of miles from Rambling Pines near Mt.Airy. You can contact me at nbrinkleystaley@comcast.net .

Actually from Woodbine I would continue on I70 east to Baltimore. Then take the beltway towards Catonsville (I think it may be 695 south) and from it take 95 south towards Washington DC.

There is no way to avoid bad traffic around Baltimore and Washington and the roads around Frederick including rt 15 south can be very confusing with lots of stop and go traffic two lane roads and a tiny bridge over the Potomac river near Point of Rocks. VA roads are terribly marked with road numbers not town names once you get off the big interstates so I avoid them if I can.

Can't disagree with taking 70 to 695 then to 95. I Travel to Falls Church VA from Hanover PA I prefer rt27 to 270 to 495 then to 95. Cuts out the 695 Baltimore Traffic. Don't think either way will be to terrible on that Saturday. We head to FL in Dec will be going the 270 route. Which ever way you go hope you have a great time and travel safe.

Smile Will try I70-27 to I270 to I495 to I95

Will try I70-27 to I270 to I495 to I95. We will be in Ellicott city(camping in Woodbine) for 3 days so I'll ask around. The alternative looks to be 70w to 95 and then south. Thanks-I'll let everyone know eventually.

From Woodbine rt 27 which is a 2 lane road with traffic speed cams at 25 mph frequently is a very bad choice.

Continue on I70 to the Baltimore Beltway and pick up the 6 lane road to DC. Look at the map it takes you on the east and least congested side of the Capitol. I270 is the worst stretch of road even on a Saturday. I traveled it to work for 30 years. 30 miles = 3 hours.

I'd take the route you planned if you are comfortable on two lane roads with small shoulders for part of the trip. The Potomoc bridge is no problem.
anything near the beltway will kill ya on Black Friday weekend. The best way into Fredericksburg is route 17. But it sounds like you have no particular reason to go to Fredericksburg other than it puts you on 95 south. Since it is less than a 3 hour drive from your campground...why not get further south? The americamps RV park is just off 95 and just north of richmond and 45 minutes further on. Good park & location.
Good luck either way.

Agree with Crickenwood- would avoid I270. Go over to 695 (Baltimore beltway) to 95S to 495/95 on East side of DC metro area to 95S.
Sometimes we go I81 but there are many speeding trucks.
I95 from DC down is going to be heavy too. It normally has stops every so often to Fredericksburg.
See you in Florida!

From Nova Scotia we travel s on I-95 to Portsmouth Me...west to Danbury Ct, south to NY...cross Tap Bridge....then s on Garden State Pkwy/NJ Tnpk Around Washington & Baltimore on beltways in a clockwise direction to Fredericksburg then I-95 south ending up in Sarasota, Fl......Tolls on route but cheaper and quicker than going west to I-81 and back east to Freder. We leave right after Christmas and need two days of good weather to get south of NY without any "SNOW!!!!"

If you get on the beltway before 7:30 in morning or after 7pm at night it's not bad. If you try after 3pm you might as well pull off and take a nap. I always plan to drive beltway at those times.

I was born in Fredericksburg, have a son in Walkersville Md. and we live in Florida now. We just got back and I would get on 81 south from Gettysburg, take 66 to 17 down to Fredericksburg. STAY AWAY FROM WASHINGTON D.C. I don't know where you are staying in Fredericksburg, but campgrounds are scarce. Expensive KOA is there, not much else. Good luck

We have gone to Florida from Maine the past 4 years and will be heading out in early Dec. We also go to Harrisburg, take 81 to 66, then 17 to Fredricksburg where we get back on 95. These are pretty good roads and avoids D.C. and Baltimore.

They are leaving from Woodbine, MD going south on 95. Fredricksburg is not their destination.

Smile clarification on route

We are staying in Woodbine(Rambling Pine resort) Md, to see family for 3 days, and then going south. I want to get back on 95 so I thought that taking 15 south to 17 to 95 headng to Fredricksburg would get there. w're spending the night(Sat 28th) at the KOA n Rocky Mt/Enfield. Then Yemassee KOA SC on Sun. Gamble Rogers Rec area-Flagler Beach Fl on Mon and finally to Whisper Creek in LaBelle,FL until the end of April.Look for the "NH" plates!
Just so everyone knows-you guys are great! I love this forum. Keep up the good work and see you on the road.
