Niagara Falls

Heading to the Niagara Falls area in August. Any suggestions on things to do besides the falls. Good restaurants are welcome also.

Head up to the town of Lewiston, about 10 miles north of N.F. Great little town with shop, brew pub, and several very good restaurants. Another 8 miles from Lewiston is Old Fort Niagara located at the mouth of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Lot of history battling the British to control the river. If you bring your passports you can go over to the Canadian side of the falls. Very touristy area, much more so than the U.S. side. Also, following the road along the river there are two excellent towns, Queenston and even better Niagara on the Lake. Along this road are some world class wineries and restaurants and Niagara on the Lake is one of the best town main streets found anywhere. Beware though of high Canadian pricing and taxes besides paying like a tourist. About 15 miles west of N.F. Canada is the Welland Canal connecting Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Pretty cool to hang around and watch 800 foot freighters going through the locks. After that, why not head into Buffalo, NY for a night. Only 20 miles south of N.F. Buffalo's waterfront has something going on almost every day if not weekend. Also there is triple A baseball right in the middle of the city, Shea's Theater, Elmwood Avenue shops, Allentown Art District and enough great restaurants to feed anyone's appetite. This would include the world famous Anchor Bar on Main Street where deep fried chicken wings were invented. Several boat cruises with different types of tours and entertainment will take you out into Lake Erie. Good Luck on your trip and enjoy Western New York!

X2 for Bissels!. Frog had a Rally there last year and it was a great campground. Teriffic pool! Actually, it is built to look like a lake and it had a very nice kiddy pool as well. Enjoyed it very much. Had dinner at the Skylon tower. Food was very good and views were terrific.

We are still researching, but it looks like we will stay on the Canada side.

There are two campgrounds on the American side, on Grand Island, less than a 10 minute ride to the falls. One is Branches on Niagara which is only a couple of years old and has received very good reviews and the other is a KOA also with good reviews. Also, about 15 miles north of the falls is an excellent New York State Park, Four Mile Creek with great sites right on the shores of Lake Ontario, though don't know if they would be available short reservation. I will be staying there the weekend of Saturday August 23 to be close to the fantastic Lewiston Jazz Festival. Main stage with national acts with several smaller stages up and down Main St. Great music, food, adult beverages and people watching. Once again, staying in Canada you will be faced with Canadian taxes and high prices on almost everything including gas at around $6 a gallon.

Make sure you fill your tank before crossing the border. 1.35 a liter. We stayed at the campark campground last week and found it to be lacking on some amenties. The pool is small and during the weekdays not much going on at campground. I would recommend the yogi bear campground. Nice pool. Nice camp store and big bath houses. Enjoy

Anyone ever travel rt 5 along Lake Erie in P.A. And in New York ? We are going to Lake Erie State Park (N.Y.) and would like to take scenic route but didn,t know if it was a good route to take 5th wheel on , low overpass , tight turns .

We have stayed at the KOA on the Canadian side. As most KOAs they have a variety of sizes, lots for the kids to do, nice clean facilities. They have both an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. It is right on Lundy's Lane just off the QEW so it is easy to get to where you want to go.

I would try to get in a preseason Bills game if possible. Nothing like watching a game in that stadium in a tee shirt and shorts!

The lower Niagra is actually an unclassed rapids river, meaning beyond class 5 in some parts.

On the US side; Old Fort Niagara is one of the most pristine forts to survive American History.
Buffalo, NY; excellent relaxation on the waterfront, view upclose the terminous of the historic erie canal, walk the Erie Basin Marina, take in the flower gardens, grap some food, or ice cream, bring a chair sit on the grass and watch the sailboats, the 1833 lighthouse, and a sun set . And it's all free, except the food of course. As you enter the marina, drive past the booth and you will find ample free parking, where you can walk to all (except the lighthouse), as everything is close by. Enjoy and welcome to WNY.

Doc, you'll find Rt.5 a very nice ride along Lake Erie shores. I have driven it from Erie, PA right into Buffalo, NY. Not a lot of traffic, good straight road with out twists and turns. Other than the view of the lake however there isn't much more you'll pass through. There are some wineries on route and nearby, though its a young wine trail (Lake Erie Wine Trail) and I don't think their wines are to good.

Doc, the only underpass I can think of is going into Lake Erie State Park. You turn right off of 5 and loop around under 5 heading into the park. I would think that with the amount of campers they get there should be adequate height, though you may want to give the park a call to confirm.

We stayed at Branches of Niagara on grand island and it was great.
