nice campgrounds near Washington DC July 4th
Looking for nice campgrounds near DC for July 4 week. It appears that Maryland State Parks don't offer RV sites. We usually try and stay in state parks because we prefer open campgrounds with parks around them.
Will be visiting family in Silver Spring, but distance to DC is probably key. Would prefer to not be more than 1 hour drive out.
Appreciate any suggestions, and if you can post a link that would be awesome.

plenty of Md state parks have good size sites. Some have electric. Most have water available, but not on site

That is the problem. Looking for full hook up sites.

Cherry Hill is supposed to be pretty nice. My son and his wife live in Silver Spring and that is where we plan to stay next time we visit. They have a nice web site. Cherry Hill Park is the Closest Campground to Washington, DC :|: Cherry Hill Park The only thing that bothers me is driving around the Belt Way. yuch! Definitely avoid rush hour traffic if there is any such time.

We always stay at the Fort Meade Military RV park but if you're not eligible I would suggest finding an RV park near a train station. We park our vehicle at the train station and take the tourist trams around DC. I think a team ticket is about $20 per person but you don't have to find a place to park, the trams run every half hour and make the rounds of all the attractions. Also once downtown you get a metro pass and ride the very nice Subway.

Can a veteran stay at a military reservation RV park or do you have to be current military or retired?

You have to be Retired military or 100% disabled to stay at military parks.

We've taken two groups to DC for the Cherry Blossom Festival (about 75 RVs in 2012, our first FROG tour, and another 50 the next year). Cherry Hill worked very well for us.
They have a bus that will pick you up at the office and take you to the metro, although they go through the University of Maryland area, not to the nearest station. You can drive one exit, about a mile and a half, to the nearest station, park, and catch Metro into the city very easily.

We stayed a place called Bar Harbor Campground. It is on the Chesapeake Bay. And it just north of Baltimore. Right off I95 Really nice place. Small but we enjoyed it.

We stayed at Cherry Hill Park this past summer...pretty nice park...clean, well laid out...nice pools...store is THE most stocked campground stores I've come across for RV maint. & repair. The area is a little seedy though.

KOA in Millersville MD is Good. Close to Metro Station for easy access to DC
