thanks for the pictures. When we lived in PA (moved last fall) we would spend around 30 night per year there between Hatteras KOA, Ocracoke national campground and Teeters.
in 25 years of OBX camping we have come right after storms, left right before storms, and one year even rode out a storm
.
One year we left as a CAT1 approached, we went back to Williamsburg KOA.. That night the storm track changed and did a direct hit on Williamsburg. campground owner knocked on my door at 11:00 PM and told me to leave. I told him "no way". the next day I called to make sure 12 was open they said "you should have stayed, we only has showers".
1 year later a tropical storm approached. its only a TS so we figured we would stay
. Right before it hit the Waves NC beach it was upgraded to a CAT1. Man the wind howled, the camper rocked, the SAT dish blew over so they hooked us up to cable for free. As water was blowing across the roof it was washing up hill into the Refrigerator vent and down through the refrigerator cabinet out onto the floor. never again. we had to sleep with slides closed because awning toppers were going to rip off.
We were there this year the week before laborday. They started forecasting Hurricane Dorian was coming straight up through Florida, and being newbie FL residents we went on vacation and forgot to remove the furniture from Lanai, So we headed back to Fl a couple days early.
We left Ocracoke and took the ferry to Cedar Island, than followed coastal highways down to SC22 I think it was. We were supposed to stop at a friends on Conway SC for 2 nights but he said "Go Home and get ready for the storm". so we hightailed it out to 95 and went south.
We got to our home in Central FL (18 hour trip I think it was) and Hurricane skipped us, but my buddy in Conway lost power for a while and Ocracoke got Wacked!
Now that OBX is so far away, i think I need to start exploring all these Keys here in Florida
