We stayed at the KOA a couple of years ago. Great campground, most sites with pads. BUT...don't expect to see the ocean from your site. The park is on the ocean, but there's a very high dune blocking the view from most ocean front sites. I vaguely recall that some premium sites at the north end of the park had a view, but they were few in number. You can get to the beach by crossing the dune on designated paths. Also, some sites get flooded during heavy rain.

OBX - "Camp Hatteras" or "Camp Hatteras KOA"

We so much look forward to going back there in July!

Thanks so much. After comparing the two and listening to everyone's input I think we're going with Camp Hatteras. Now we need to decide if we're going Ocean Side or Sound. Less of a walk to the beach.

This is our first camping trip to OBX. We rented a beach house up in Corolla a few years ago.

Thanks again everyone.

If you have kids with you do the KOA....it's more resort like, bigger pool, bigger hot tub. Camp Hatteras is showing it's age. Some pads are below grade and if it rains hard you're left with standing water. We enjoyed our stays at Camp Hatteras but we prefer Hatteras KOA.

We spent 10 days at the KOA 2 years ago with the grandkids. I think it was the cleanest campground I've ever been in. Nice play area and pool, walk to the ocean or bay side. Don't know about the other one you mentioned

No kids. Just me, my wife and our little Maltese "Pazzo".

Very interesting points.

Thanks.

If you plan to spend a lot of time on the beach go with the beach side. A lot of people drive over to sound side to watch the sunsets. Empty parking lot to the right side of sound side camping area.

Don't forget to check the Camp Hatteras web site. Sometimes they run specials or discounts. Not much off the price but it helps. Enjoy

FYI, I just checked the Camp Hatteras web site under specials and they have a printable coupon that gives 15% off during certain times.

Note that the ocean side at Camp Hatteras is gated, while the sound side is not. Some rumors of mischief on the sound side.
