While you're in Lancaster, you really should make an effort to visit the rarely spoken about small town of Lititz. It is a charming place with lots of boutique shops for the ladies and a great butcher/charcuterie named the Rooster Street Butcher. They are more than a butcher and a place you have to eat lunch at.

Oh, and while you are in Hershey, if you appreciate great Italian food, you must eat at Piazza Sorrento. Look it up on GOOGLE or Yelp. It is one of the best Italian restaurants anywhere.

A great online resource for the Lancaster area is Pennsylvania Dutch Country in Lancaster County PA | Amish Country activities, shopping, dining, lodging. You can find so much to do in Lancaster and this site will help you find these things.

Thanks Bruce. Yes dblr, thx. Bruce we will be in Manheim, Pinch Pond. Seemed to be in the middle of where we want to visit. Saw the gun range comments others made and that won't bother us.

Welcome to my home state. You'll love the area where you're headed. Our favorite place in the area used to be called Country Haven, recently converted to New Holland, Pennsylvania Campground | Lancaster / New Holland KOA. A quiet place with nothing to do but relax and explore... and enjoy the beautiful view.

Heading there in early October for a long weekend... our last outing of the year.

We will be there the eight of this month four days. We like to stay at Beacon Hill in Intercourse but this time we will stay at Floy's in Ronks. We like to go to Intercourse canning and sample a few food items. Shady Maple is a good place to eat at. Bird-in-hand is a good place to go, the bakery.

When in the area we always bring a cooler and on the day we leave stop by here:

Amish & Dutch Bologna, Sausage, & Bacon - Stoltzfus Meats Lancaster PA

We load up on steaks, roasts, chops, and especially sausage to stock the freezer at home.

Stoltzfus is where we go for all of our steaks, pork and sausage. In fact, last night we ate their apple and maple sausage and their Kielbasa along with some of the apple sauce made by the Intercourse Canning Company across the street. Tonight, we're eating a rib eye and some filets.

Their prices have risen considerably over the last couple of years, but they are still reasonable - probably less than anywhere else - and the quality of the meat is excellent.

They expanded this year to add a small restaurant and a bakery.

Also, a tip about Stoltzfus: They get their meat delivery on Monday. Since the busy tourist time of the year for Amish country just began and will continue through the end of October into November, you might want to plan ahead and get your meats early in the week or, at least, put an order in if you can't make it by there before the weekend, because they run out of certain cuts of beef and some of their special stuffed pork roasts and other favorites.

Their meat pies also make a great quick, easy meal to keep in the freezer.

Did you stay at Dixie Caverns in Salem? Love that campground. Super nice folks the last time I was there and great setting.

Yes! Those are Zook's Pies. You used to only be able to get them at Zook's in Ronks, but over the last year or two they have started to sell them at Stoltzfus and various road stands. We brought forty pies home one winter for our freezer and for our friends and family.

We go to a diary not to far from Intercourse that sells homemade ice cream and they have English bulldogs, big and lazy and wouldn't hurt a fly. Great ice cream and homemade waffle cones. Great place

This is Lapp Valley Farm on Mentzer Rd. All of their dairy is produced by Jersey cows which produce the best milk there is. The ice cream is excellent. They close "at dark" Monday thru Friday and at 6:00 on Saturday. Sunday, they are closed just like everywhere else around the area.

You can take a self-guided tour through the farm while you eat your ice cream or just hang out on the patio. They also have a drive through if you are in a hurry or if you don't want to tie up your horse and buggy - yes, the Amish eat ice cream, too!

You don't have to go to the dairy to try their ice cream - they have a small shop at the Kitchen Kettle Village (right across the street from Stoltzfus Meats and the Intercourse Canning Company) in Intercourse, but there's no telling how late into the season they will stay open. When it gets cool, they close for the year.
