Mt Vernon is close, Monticello not too far off.
In SE pa you also have Hershey (chocolate) and amish country.
Williamsburg and Jamestown are worth a visit also.

For something completely different, and fun for the entire family, you could check out the Spoutwood Fairie Festival on May 1, 2, & 3 in Glen Rock, PA. This is the world's largest and longest running fairy festival. You could maybe get a place at Codorus State Park, if you book early. They get about 10,000 people during the weekend, most everyone is in costume, including the pets.

Here is their website:
About the May Day Fairie Festival

My wife usually performs there but we will not be there this year. We did the videos that you'll see on that page. I also did a documentary about the festival, just Google "Glen Rock Fae".

We stayed at the Gettysburg KOA sites were small but we were looking at it being a place to hang your hat and that was it. This was 15 yrs ago and it was a clean park and well maintained. Before going I purchased this ( Gettysburg Expedition Guide) and the movie Gettysburg. My wife told me that watching the movie made her feel as though she could see the Battle as it happened when we toured the battlefield. The Expedition guide had a cd that you can listen to as it directs you around from one part of the Battle to the other. We want to go down there again this time with no kids so the 2 of us can really spend time seeing all the sites.

Think about things before you do them make life easier not harder.
