Predatory gas pricing
Don't Look for gas at I95/us58 e Roanoke VA , exit 11 3.17 per gallon . It's 2.79 at exit 4

In our town we have 2 gas stations that have been consistently .10 cents less than all the others in town. One of the 2 has multiple stations and is .10 cents less than their other stations. Been going to the 2 that are cheapest on my day off every time I need gas because they are a little out of the way.

Seen it for $2.44 here yesturday but diesel is still at $3.33 gallon

Ran into that this summer as well. On the highway it was 20 cents a liter ( about 75 cents a gallon) more expensive than in the town 2 miles off the highway.

I can drive 8 miles from my house and often times save 20-cents per gallon when I get into the next town over. What makes the higher price "predatory"?

They charge what the market will bear. They wouldn't charge that if people were not willing to pay it. Nothing "predatory" about it at all. Just capitalism at work.

Yup! I have seen similar "disparities" everywhere, even on the same exit!It's been that way for as long as I can remember.

Why would anyone expect them to all be the same price? If I owned a station, I would ALWAYS try to beat my competition on price and then reduce my operating expense to maximize profit. If I can do it better, I win.... and maybe I can win big! Isn't that the American way???
If all prices are the same, I suspect collusion and figure I'm getting screwed.

I think that's the EMPORIA exit...and the gas prices there have always been higher even though there are about ten stations there.

It's just what the market will tolerate...I guarantee if his sales drop, so will the price. Most retailers break even if they are lucky but a lot of the time are losing 1-2 cents on every gallon they sell. They pay their bills by selling chips, beer and hot food. If they price too high above what the market is willing to take then they will not sell any Budweiser and sandwiches. You will always pay more on freeway then you will in town or near a big box retailer as they set the price in competitive areas. The big box guy is only interested in getting bodies onto their parking lots (and into their stores) and not as much about making any money on gas. The smaller gas retailer has had to learn to adapt, control costs and rely on inside sales to make ends meet. It's the reason I got out of the gas/c-store business 10 years ago.

What's shocking is seeing people filling up at those more expensive stations when they could go a couple blocks down the street and save. I swear a lot of people don't even look at the price, they just pull in and fill....where I live there is a retailer that is almost always 30-40 cents more per gallon than 2 other stations that are only about 3 blocks down the road, yet people are filling up there all the time...

I agree......unless you know the surrounding area (and most Interstate travelers may not), they don't know how much further to go to get the "better deal". 
However, even "off season" here in the Myrtle Beach/N. Myrtle Beach area, I just filled up the oil burner @$2.89/gal. ($2.94 credit). Reg gas was $2.39 ($2.41 credit).

Honestly when I'm traveling through (from point A to point B), I don't look at price when I stop for fuel. I want easy in, easy out, and big rig friendly. Generally speaking, that means - one of the first stations I hit when I pull off of the highway.

I just plan on stopping where the fuel is the least expensive. Just a little planning, not having to have a 40-90 gal "extra tank in the bed" plus the pounds in the truck, makes the trip very easy. Waiting until you have to get fuel is when you really pay as it happens at the most expensive stations - always. An extra 5-10 gals in the bed is a nice to have little bit of cushion, you know, an extra 50-100 mi to get where the fuel is less.

Isn't there an app for that? I have the IExit app and use it. It will give you gas stations etc. within a 1 mile radius of the exit I believe. Also let you know if places are big rig friendly. Course this app is only good for the Interstates.

x2 Not Predatory if there was a shortage & gas was $5 a gallon that's predatory. Predatory gas pricing is illegal in Virginia.......... I paid $2.36 this AM in Roanoke I81 / I581 area..........
