Raleigh area BBQ suggestions.

We are in the camping in Henderson/Raleigh NC area and looking for suggestions of Awesome BBQ in the area. Going to be nice weather tomorrow and great day for motorcycle ride.

Not from the area but have family here ( visiting Raleigh right now). When here previously we really enjoyed The Pit BBQ which is downtown Raleigh if I remember correctly. Might have to go today now that I think about it 😋

If you are on the west side of Raleigh, try Allen and son's near Chapel Hill /Durham. They still use wood coals, hard to find.

Coopers downtown or Old Time BBQ near the fairgrounds. The Pit is awesome food- upscale atmosphere though. Not what I really look for when going out for bbq- personal preference.

Wilbers in Goldsboro at the north end of the runway. One of the top BBQ places in the nation. You need to like the vinegar based Eastern NC BBQ though. As soon as you sit down the put a bowl of hush puppies and a pitcher of sweet tea on the table.

We went to the Pit late afternoon today, and it was great. Just managed to get in and out in between some heavy showers. I'll make a note of some of the other recommendations in this thread for future trips

Raleigh area BBQ suggestions.

Yeah we will keep the others in mind for next time. The constant rain very heavy at times made us call our visit and pack up a day early. Forecast did not have any relief for today and tomorrow. So we packed up and left. Met nice folk next to us we had lots in common. They are from Raleigh, so we will probably be back. They had SOB but had toy hauler and riding motorcycles.

Thanks for all the responses.

The Skylight Inn is a must visit BBQ joint on every BBQ enthusiasts short list. Whole hog BBQ at its finest. Well worth the drive. If you happen to be in New York City this weekend 6-10-16, you can find them cooking at the Big Apple BBQ festival on Madison Avenue.

OK Pit BBQ is froo froo BBQ. It's for people who don't know what BBQ is and think because the place has pit in it's name it must be good. The sides all come from plastic bags, and the bleached out taste reflects that. The meat is mediocre at best. Not worth the expense, or the line you will wait in.

In Durham Area: The Q Shack is a must, Bob's in Creedmoor is a real BBQ joint with authentic NC taste, Backyard BBQ is also very good if you catch them open, They close after they sell out. Also agree with Allen and son's.

In Raleigh: Agree with Old Time BBQ near the fairgrounds. The Pit is not even an option.
