Richmond to Hershey

This coming weekend (well Thursday evening) we're heading to Hershey... does anyone have any experience on 495 around DC and 270 to Rt15 in PA eventually to RT83?? Any concerns? I'm mapping myself out for a fuel stop somewhere halfway and that looks to be between the Rockville and Urbana areas... Good gas stations to pull into/out of??
Been busy looking at Googles "street view" and looks like exits 15B and 26 have the best gas stations to get in/out.

Looking for others' experiences..... Thanks!!

I'd rather tattoo my privates than drive 495 and 270 during rush-hour. BUT before I get all nutty- what time would you be hitting that area/those?

HAHA... nice... I know what you mean but unfortunately, that's the route I "planned" on taking... Anyhow... leaving my house in Richmond sometime between 4-5 and should be... should be on 495 an hour and half later... Was aiming to be at the Lickdale/Jonestown KOA between 9/10... aiming for 9/930 or earlier. Wife and I figured we'd both work til 4, hook up, finish packing and get on the road by 5 ..... Mind you this is on a Thursday night too....

The only fuel stop that I've hit was just south of 495 on I-95. There's a truck stop on one side of the street and on the other, there's actually a McDonald's that has long rig parking spots in the back. But, that's likely before you need...

Thursday night traffic is better than Friday night traffic. But strangely, the DC beltway traffic seems to get worse each night after Monday (Tues is worse than Mon; Wed worse than Tues; Thurs worse than Wed; Friday sucks).

Getting up to DC- you should be fine since you're going against traffic. From there, it's really a crap-shoot. If you go around the side of the beltway that you're thinking of, you're going to mix into the VA traffic. Plan for 30mph and hope for the best.

From 495, you're going to be in heavy traffic going up 270 until you get north of Gaithersburg and even then, lighter but still thick traffic until you get to Frederick.

Another option is to take 301 up to Baltimore and then go straight up I-83. You trade one beltway for another, but you should hit Baltimore a bit later and fair a little better. The wild card is that 301 is stop-lights and how might it treat you. Plus, it has the Harry P. Nice bridge (which is neither) to go over.

Route for 301

By map, it adds 1/2 hour to the drive. Just not sure if you'll save time or lose time due to the lights vs. rush hour on the beltway.

Yeah, I thought of 301... since that's the way we go from Richmond to CT to avoid the DC area... 301/97/695/95/NJTpke, etc...
Hmmmm.. guess i'll just have to make some kind of executive decision by Thursday afternoon...
Thanks a lot for the suggestion and expected conditions

Why not take 17 to 81 and miss all the traffic?

You will be on 81 to get to the Jonestown KOA (Lickdale) anyway....

Its nice roads, and none of the 95 headaches.

Thanks for that one too. I saw that route on google maps and didn't think to actually look at it. The only thing i have to look for on that route is a gas station about 200 miles in. This is the first time taking our TT longer than 2 hours or one tank of gas. This should be a good trip to figure put how far i can go comfortably between fillups. Either way, I will most likely make my decision in the afternoon Thursday.
Thanks!!!

Keep us posted. I'm honestly not enthusiastic about the whole 301 route. The 17 to 81 sounds better.

We live in Harrisburg (15 min to Hershey) and always use this route. You have a Flying J at I-95 x104 in Virgina - may be too close to home...

If you choose the route 17 to 81 approach I would fill up at the Flying J @ I-81 x323. This is just before you cross into WV. It will most likely be the cheapest fuel you purchase before you make it into PA and while in PA during your stay.

Both locations have RV lanes and easy to get in and out of.

X's 2

This is the only way I go to Richmond. I did the 495/270/15 route one time and that was one time to many.
Plenty of fuel stations off 17 and I-81.
