When my Mother in law was alive we would visit in Chesapeake Ohio. Trip up and back was a nightmare. Never travel on holidays ow if at all possible.

I81 can be a real pita. There are daily, yes daily tractor trailer accidents in some stretches.

it's a 325 mile stretch of road. I don't think that even if an accident a day was the case, that it would be above average.

I81 has way above average they are wanting to make it a 6 lane interstate. In the 325 mile stretch there are many more than one tractor trailer accident a day . There is one a day avg on a 20 mile stretch..........

Hi Tom,

I made this run this past Spring. I took 33 to 522. It was a relaxing drive with some great vineyards along the way.

How did you do on the 211 through Thornton Gap? Steep?

I would rather that I-81 than I-95 through DC.

I had no trouble with it at all. I travel in a 2003 VW Westy. I 'm not sure what your setup is but if my Westy can handle it I would imagine you can too. My wife and I heading back up to Shenandoah River State Park this week to enjoy some of the vineyards in the area.
