I drove my 4x4 Silverado 1500 down to OBX and opted to do a tour than put my truck through the beach abuse. Even with true 4 wheel drive they lower the air pressure in the tires to get through the sand. Could you do it? I suppose, will you get stuck at some point? My experience there says YES!!!

Rent a Jeep...BUT...checkout enterprise car rentals on the main road in Kill Devil Hills...they have 2 and 4 door Jeeps at about $100 a day on a weekly basis which is WAY WAY less expensive than the tourist trap jeep renters.

Camp Hatteras would be my choice over the KOA if you want oceanside...but if you prefer soundside...check out Frisco Woods...a bit further south on the road but beautiful soundside, well kept campground with lots of stuff to do. Our favorite section is C23>>>>C18 and you can request those when reserving.

Just got back from a week stay at camp Hatteras, simply outstanding. A little more pricey than others but well worth it. Another great place is Frisco woods a little further south .located on the sound side. near the ferry to Ocracoke. Great time of year for the outer banks.

Really like Camp Hatteras. That picture I took was from our campsite. Really Nice! One thing I didn't realize about the outer banks (we've never been here) is that you will have to drive a bit to get to some sightseeing. Ocracoke was around a 40 minute drive to the ferry. Closest grocery store is around 15 miles. Things like the wright Brothers monument is about a 40 minute drive also. Corolla is around 1 1/2 hour drive. We like the campground a lot, but a lot more driving than we're use to.
