I-16 has been all concrete since first being built back in the 60's. (We would go out there when they were digging it out and finding sharks teeth, big ones). It can be brutal, lonely and dark at night. Mother in Law got seasick riding the I-16 waves and bouncing along! As some have said getting off on some of the old US highways you have better riding roads, most 4 lane. Slower going, but you see allot of Georgia forgotten by most people that just pass through Georgia. And a load of good eat um up places. Fuel prices may be quite different that interstate prices where there is more competition. On I-16, Dublin always has the best on I-16. Right now I-16 construction is not an issue except at the I-16 - I-75 merge in Macon going across the river... it is really jacked up and slow progress. Traffic moves, but the idiots that wait till the last minute to read a sign and then decide to merge is what the slow up is about. If you can't see more than 50 yards ahead and read then you need to turn it in!
Crossing the state E - W US 280 or N - S US 441, also US 80 from Macon all the way to Savannah (mostly two lane smooth black top). It basically Was the way to Macon from Savannah prior to I-16, then run basically parallel so any exit will go to US80 and get you around a backup.
I believe I have been on every highway, dirt-road, pig-trail and path in Georgia in my life. A nice, new campground that opened about a year or two ago is Creekfire RV Resort on the West side of Savannah an Hwy 204 (Ft. Argyle Rd.) & I-95.

As I mentioned in my earlier post #3 there are ways to avoid I 16 if coming out of Atlanta may be few miles further but better roads.

We visited the new camp ground Creekfire Motor ranch during Thanksgiving, it opened a year ago but its a bit pricey but nice. Exit 94 off I95 turn right onto 204 1 mile on left.Later RJD

Out of Atlanta you can stay on I-75 to Macon instead of the trek from Atlanta to Macon... That puts you another 75 miles south on good roads. Jump off of I-75 around Macon for your alternative roads to Savannah.

Im NOT going to get into a "My road is worse than your worst road" discussion. This thread has had plenty of that. Im also NOT able to offer any suggestions for the first time anyone drives on one of our Super Highways called Interstates.

What I AM gong to do is offer a suggestion. I did a MapQuest search for routes and learned that the OP's trip is about 4 hours long by interstate.

There are also several surface routes that could be used as alternates though. S to Warner Robbins, over to Statesboro, then to Savannah for example.

True, you won't be barreling down the road at 70 MPH and the trip will take longer; but the trip will be smoother with more attractive scenery and all around more enjoyable.

Just a suggestion, my .02 worth. It is worth to you what you paid for it. Good Luck, Have FUN!!

Don't know what you punched in for Mapquest but from Chattanooga to Savannah is 5hr and 56 min (366 miles)and if your driving 70 still take you 5 hrs 20 min and not with a camper. Not going to happen. (OP profile shows Chattanooga as residence not Atlanta) Later RJD

I was replying to the OP, Whose opening sentence is, "Driving from Atlanta to Savannah using interstate 16 was the worst drive so far with or 2017 Rockwood 8335BS."

Whether you chose to follow this or any other suggestion I make or anyone else on this forum makes is strictly YOUR decision.

I do not try and TELL ANYONE what to do. I do make suggestions, but your life is for you to live, and the consequences of your decisions are yours alone to bear.

Not trying to tell anybody what to do just post a fact of where he most likly started from. His opening statement sounded like Atlanta so take it for what its worth. Later RJD

We too have experienced I-16. No amount of slowing down will help. Sometimes driving in the left lane did help but I think it is more a function of the wheelbase. We traveled to Savannah one other time in our van and experienced no problem. We'll stay off I-16 with our rig.

LOL! I can't recall the highway, but my DW and I went from Winder, GA to VA to trade in our FR Toy Hauler bumper tow for the new 5'er and she was saying she was gonna have to double or triple sports bra for the ride back!

Of course, once we switched over to the 5'er, there was no comparison in the smoothness of the ride.

We have driven the reverse, Savannah to Atlantis using I-16, three years ago. No problems then.

Stayed at the same campground and drove the same road this past October. Was not the smoothest road but I’ve driven the roads in Illinois and
I 16 is much nicer.

I am surprised no one suggested checking the load in the trailer or hitch weight. We had a bad tow one time. Then I confused to parking extra beverages in the nose of the trailer. This the tongue weight was heavy and the trailer had a bad tail wag. Moved a little stuff around and all good again. Just a suggestion that bad roads could make a bad load worse.

I don't understand why some states/provinces can put down a concrete road and have it fairly smooth and the next state has it terrible. Route 15 leaving PA is nice but when you hit NY it is terrible. NY put concrete on the Thruway in the 1950s and found it didn't hold up so switched to asphalt. Now they are putting concrete back on it and it is terrible. I am sure there is a good reason and I hope someone will explain it. I hate driving concrete.

Can anybody tell me how I 69 is between the Michigan boarder and Indianapolis? Heard it was pretty bad and that I should take US 31. Anybody have any advise? Leaving for Florida soon and want to get there in one piece!

Got tired of all the jouncing on concrete roads and bought an Airsafe Hitch, made all the difference in the world.
