Shenandoah NP dog restrictions

A dog was killed by a bear in the park so now part of the park is closed to dogs until September to give the bear and her cubs some relief from pets in their territory. A bear also got so close to a hiker he had to hit and poke it with hiking poles before it would go away. That's too close for comfort. Stay careful and use common sense. If hiking in bear areas, read up on how to act or ask the part rangers to orient you! Hiking sticks are good to have, also bear spray where permitted. (Bear spray is also a fairly close range defense.)
