I have lived in Durham for 38 years. For 38 years I have watched vehicles hit that bridge. Several years ago the RR installed that steel I-beam across the front of the bridge to help protect it.
There is an over-height detector and large flashing red lights to alert drivers. Apparently to little avail.

Actually, there are several low bridges in Durham, all due to the fact that the RR was there first. When the RR was built folks were in Model A's so clearance was no issue.
That one famous bridge is on a major road and thus hit the most, but the others also get hit occasionally.
Driving an 18 wheeler in Durham can be a challenge.

Woohoo, we are booked for an ocean front Ocean Lakes summer trip. Thank you for everyone's input and suggestions. As of now, Ocean Lakes says they don't plan on charging for their new water park, it will be included in the booking fees.
We also have a trip booked mid spring to Robbinsville for a car event on the tail of the dragon. I am so excited for all this year holds in store.

We like Ocean Lakes too, we just go in the off season. We are going again in early March this year, it's a great park

It is our last day here after a nice two week stay. Ocean Lakes is a favorite of ours. It is tough to leave on such a pretty day. 😭
