Next year we may try Robert Moses State park there are a couple of sites that you can see the ships coming out of the locks so I can add to my ship collection.

This was a side trip so I could make sure Grand son would be able to race in the local soap box derby our car is the red and white one. Sorry this post has nothing to do with camping on the river but one of those things we occasionally overlook when planning our camping trips. Good thing we were close.

Some friends & I went to St Jean Port Jolie 2 years ago in a 5th wheeler with our 3 motorcycles. Great campground. Rode all over the area. There's a motorcycle museum in Port Jolie as well.
Returned to the area last year with my wife but in our car and stayed the other side of the Seaway near the Montmorency Falls.
Next time I hope to have my own travel trailer/toy hauler.

There are many park along the St. Lawrence river on both the Canadian and American side. There is a state park on Wellesley Island on the American side. There is a CG in Alex. Bay, NY that is on the river. There are boat tours you can take on either side of the river. Uncle Sam boat tours run out of Alexandria Bay, NY and the Rockport Boat lines run from Rockport Ont. on the Canadian side. Both companies will take you up close to some of the 1000 Islands. Both companies also offer stops a Boldt Castle on Heart Island. If you do take the trip to Boldt Castle from the Canadian side you will need your passport. They tours do take you along the main channel of the St. Lawrence Seaway. If you are lucky you might be able to see a large ship. I work for part time for the Rockport Boat Lines and have seen up to 4 ships during our 1 hr. tour. if you are in the 1000 Islands area I recommend taking one of the boat tours being offered.

There are also boat tours to another castle, Singer Castle once owned by the owner of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Then on the Canadian side you have Fort Henry in Kingston and Fort Wellington in Prescott also further down river Upper Canada Village .

If you go to this area make sure you stop in Clayton at the antique boat museum, well worth it. They also have an in water antique boat show in late July or early August with any number of old Chris Crafts, Shephards and others, fantastic to see these boats up close and to also hear them start up and run, that sound is a one of a kind. Have camped both sides and both are great sites.

I definitely agree that if you are in the 1000 islands area you should take one of the smaller boat tours like Rockport Boat Lines so you'll be able to get into narrower channels and see the islands up close. The boat tours out of Gananoque and Kingston use larger boats and won't get you in as close. They also take longer to get to the best part of the islands.
